I would be disappointed with the proposed change since it would replace a feature I use (viewing higher resolution images directly) with a feature I don't (archive downloads).

If the perk needs balancing, maybe the filesize limit could be increased some (not quite to broken levels), but in return maybe it doesn't work during peak hours or costs much higher against the image limit.

Maybe the limit could be bumped to 5mb for both png and jpg. Half the original size but probably now good enough for more works? With maybe a small (or medium) cost increase in image limits.

For the 1334 doujin pages I've edited this would change the 56 png and 7 jpg images that wouldn't meet this limit down to a total of 14 images, 2 of which are jpg

With the prevalence of VPNs, image limits don’t do much anymore. It would need to be changed so that image limits are tied to all accounts with the perk, and it might just lead to rippers getting multiple accounts. I could see someone making a script that calculates what images in a gallery can be ripped with source nexus, then only using GP on the images that are too large. In fact, I remember already seeing a script that did something similar years ago.

I think the perk was just made in different times. File sizes are going up, ripping is going up. Maybe the perk could be made so that you can browse source images of all sizes, but requires some amount of GP per image? I think anyone with enough hath to buy the perk(especially now) probably also has a decent chunk of GP. I'm more partial to the 50% archive discount though, mainly because it'll help me make more torrents.

Frankly, both options feel fairly useless.
The reason I got the perk was so that I could access normal images instead of just samples without constantly spending GP. Archives are expensive (given that trying to get credits through HV means half an hour for a single arena), and I thought the perk would let me go back to the way things used to be, based on my image limit instead of site currency.
As it turned out the logic had been changed before I even bought in, meaning that the vast majority of the time, I still only get a sample instead of the normal image. The perk as it currently is implemented does almost nothing, because the limit is just too low. The only way the current concept would work is if that limit were increased again.

As far as archives, it's impossible to judge since I have no idea of how much archives even cost. I absolutely hate the fact that the "Archive Download" button just jumps straight to charging some unknown amount of GP without even telling you how much. PLEASE have that button open a window that says "downloading an archive will cost x GP. You currently have Y GP. Do you wish to download?" first. This isn't relevant to the Source Nexus perk and I'd consider it a basic and essential feature, but it's hard to make a judgement on the proposed perk change without that information. The wiki says that there used to be a page like that, and I don't know when or why it changed, but it desperately needs to come back.
But in any case, that version of the perk would still mean spending a lot of site currency (~1M GP) to get a discount on downloads bought with site currency. If the wiki's rate of 42GP/MB is more current than its description of the archive interface, then a 50% discount would mean you'd need to download over 40GB worth of archives just to break even. At that level, I think a more appealing structure for the perk would be a quota of free archives, rather than a discount.

Do you have your archiver settings on any of the auto options? If so you might want to change it to manual and you'll see the GP cost before confirming.

I checked that config page before posting that to be sure, and it was set to manual/manual. But what tripped me up was that when I actually tried to download archives I was using the other place, which has its own settings page which had somehow ended up on auto. Oops.

For me enabling source nexus is because the resampled jpeg quality is too low, 2400px resolution is enough for me, but the resampled jpeg has noticeable artifacts.

It would be nice to provide a visually lossless resampling instead of the source nexus.
Maybe can consider increasing the jpeg encoding quality or using new image formats such as webp/avif/jpegxl.

Paying for the perk to view images at their original quality yet now having to see them at compressed quality (really glaring for colored images) if they're SLIGHTLY too big is honestly ridiculous.

I'd take the discount.

I don't support donator pricing for archive downloads since my primary hath income (to get source nexus) is from running H@H client. Since H@H client gets donator pricing already, that makes the change useless for user who runs H@H client.

I support increasing the limit slightly like other users have purposed. Also curious, what is the reason it's currently 3MB for PNG, 4MB for JPG and not for example 3MB for both PNG and JPG? I assume something similar will happen where PNG and JPG won't be the same size when if we do increase the limit.

while i don't think it'd be a good for for a perk with "source" in the name, I'd definitely enjoy a webp or avif option(jpegxl isn't supported by Chromium based browsers). I'd imagine retroactively adding such a thing would use so much processing power and storage that it wouldn't be feasible for how many people would actually use it. The average person is so dumb that when they encounter webp(or anything that isn't jpg or png) they think it's DRM or something lol

The discount seems less attractive with the new update, since it's only 5 GP/MB now.

I always use torrents.
i dont waste GP.
and will stress if use GP. but i have no choice.
I sure everyone love discount.
But Old galleries.some not have torrents.
some torrents old no seed or waiting for seed too long.

I love original quality. when have 4k monitor read in vertical mode.

Indeed, I often browse artbooks instead of doujinshi. So the image is usually exceeds the upper limit of 3MB.

Does this also affect downloads using H@H besides the discount those users already have?
