It quite possible that they should not be allowed to use karma, but seriously quit whining about it Brainy. It's only 266 karma and you should be used to all the other smurfs hitting you by now. A simple probationary period in which a lurker cannot imbue (and for fairness, cannot be imbued), for say, their first 50 posts, sounds reasonable. At least by then they'll have made some sort of contribution to the forums.

A lurker retains lurker status until their twentieth post, correct? I think until that twentieth post is made, they should be unable to use the karma system. After all, other functions aren't available to them until that point, right? I know that they can't change their user title until they have posted 100 times, and their name in the users list doesn't become bold until they have posted 20 times.

I'd say that having to wait until they lost lurker status could create a bunch of spam posts, then I remembered where we are.

Why the fuck even have the ability to give negative karma, anymore? Get rid of the red numbers, only go by the green, have one imbue button, who cares, anymore? It's not like having negative levels really effects anything on the site, nor would it be possible for it to get low enough that it'd make a difference due to positive karma abuse. In any case, I don't really see the point.

Also, the fact that abusing the system in a positive way isn't considered abuse is laughable. There is such a thing as excessive unnecessary positive reinforcement. It's what separates the spoiled people from the ones that aren't. So, either get rid of the negative part of the system so there's not such an unbalanced system, or balance the positive and the negative, any limits on negative get applied to positive, any boons to positive get applied to the negative. It's only fair, and that's kind of what karma is...
