When I browse private galleries, "large size" thumbnails are selected by default

"Normal Size" option is not allowed to be used in private gallery. And selecting "Normal Size" for default thumbnail configuration does not affect this

You can fake it with CSS. Install Stylus and add something like this:

Then Large thumbnail mode looks like Normal thumbnail mode. Or you could make it smaller yet.
