My Kepler card works fairly well with nouveau. I have a 1070 (one gen after Maxwell) as well but i haven't tried that with nouveau.
According to [nouveau.freedesktop.org] https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/FeatureMatrix.html it works now at least.
The last cards that can be reclocked properly are the keplers and maybe the 750/750 Ti Maxwells. The rest of the Maxwells and all later cards require signed firmware blobs or the clocking doesn't work and the fan state can't be adjusted.
And since pascal doesn't support the chip that the new nvidia "open source" drivers work with, users of Pascal or late maxwell cards are screwed.
That new chip (I forget what it's called) moves a lot of the stuff that would otherwise be in the driver software onto the board itself so nvidia doesn't have to reveal any of its eye pee.

I liked Nouveau a lot on my Kepler card. It didn't support Vulkan if I remember correctly, but that was fine.

Is 4090 essential for 4K 144hz Gaming? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/cry.gif)

Nah something like a 4080/7900XTX is plenty enough

Any hope for small form factor or integrated graphics?

I have a small form factor that is basically a laptop with a laptop 1060. Seems to still way out perform integrated solutions.

Here I am sticking to 1080p gaming with my 1080ti. It's really not that bad tbh, I still think 1440p or 4k gaming is overrated.

Yeah if you stick to 1080p then the 1080ti is still excellent.

Is it worth going higher? Maybe? Depends on the game engine I guess.

Yeap 1080p with high to Ultra setting is more than enough for most gamers max 1440p. Because when you go for 4K and higher not only you need an expensive graphic card but you also have to pay for those expensive 4K monitors to fully enjoy the cream on top because what's the use if you bought a RTX 4090 or radeon XTX if you are gonna game on a 1080p monitor. That's like you have a lambo but never go above 60 lol >_<

I don't recall spending nearly as much as the 4090's average price even on the original Titan.

MSI Super Dragon 3070 Ti can be competent for most mainstream games at 2K resolution, so there is no need to upgrade

I used to use those weird ass exotic AMD cards named after planets because they were 'good value' compared to the Titan series.

i think the same, but with my 1070ti, even with modern games i have no problems at all in 1080p, and i dont wanna spend a lot of money for 4k monitors either.

There is no need to change the 50 series graphics card. If you have money, it will be fine. Compared with the 40 series, the performance improvement of the 50 series is not very obvious. Everyone knows Lao Huang's knife method. Now the mine tide has passed, and it can still be used for 5 years. Now the performance is generally excessive

At 1080p I find the comp with the GTX 1060 can run mostly everything I want.

For my comp with GTX 3080, the only thing it struggles on is the AAA ray tracing ultra modes. I almost feel its a bit artificial to sell the latest hardware though. I ditched the 1080ti for a 3080 due to VR issues.

I wish cyberpunk would focus more on gameplay and story than the latest ultra monster super mega 8k nightmare raytracing ultra sampling. I was more annoyed by the nerfs and missing features than the benefits of new slightly more shinny graphics.

ray tracing
Never quite understand the hype behind ray tracing. The effects do look nice at times, but we have gotten so good at faking it (without setting your GPU on fire) anyway.

Maybe it's more of an excitement from designers/developers' perspective, I donno. But for me, it just screams planned obsolescence.

Speaking of planned obsolescence, is that 1080TI you reflowed still holding together?

If I don't do ray tracing and stick to 1080p, yeah it still holds up quite well.

The GTX 980 I reflowed in the oven, lasted about 9months after that then died completely.

I hate when big tech finds a new meme to bilk VCs out of money. I might have an aneurysm when they start tying to shill "AI managed blockchain integrations".
