From my experience in converting my porn stashes & editing various manga/hentai, WebP works great on color images but for BW doujin with heavy & sharp/crisp screentones/contrast (e.g. https://e-hentai.org/g/2376514/378f4bce27/), they often perform worse than JPG or even PNG8. It just seems to be not that welll optimized for grayscale images with barely any gradients.

But animated WebP being much much better than GIF is probably more than enough reason for me to support it, but at that point might as well go for WebM.

Yeah for me grayscales were even bigger than the originals if converting them from png in some cases. And yeah, support for animated webp or webm would be nice but at this point it's been "in the works" for half a decade and is unlikely to arrive. At this point it's easier to download archive and just convert the images yourself, nuking any hoping of seeding it for others. Because i probably could batch download, unpack, convert and repack the archives but batch uploading? Not gonna happen. I wouldn't mind doing all that but without batch torrent uploads i would spend insurmountable amounts of time on that. Not to mention most galleries are b/w anyway and compression wouldn't shine there.

According to [caniuse.com] https://caniuse.com/webp, WebP support is widely available in major browsers.

It will provide much better compression for either normal pictures or GIFs:
- for https://e-hentai.org/s/b73c302cff/2770952-3 raw PNG, 6341KiB to 2191KiB (cwebp, losslessly)
- for https://e-hentai.org/s/bef05cb8f3/2769361-2 raw GIF, 6678KiB to 1643KiB (gif2webp, mixed mode)

How about accepting WebP while gallery uploading so uploaders can reduce uploading time? And e-hentai will also benefit from using less storage and network traffic.

We don't add anything unless it's been supported by all major browsers for at least 5 years. WebP barely squeaks by that requirement and is in the process of being added, but AVIF isn't even supported by all major browers today so it would be at least 5 years out.

Well, that's a dissapointment.

(My hatred of webp is boundless.)
(Not to mention it'll finally make it impossible for me to browse this site from Windows 98. :p -But that's mostly unrelated to my hatred of webp.)

A lot of sites used webp as an excuse to absolutly nuke their file size down to nothing and making them look worse in the process. Not really the formats fault, but its what it was sold as, so kinda also is.
This is my main reason for hating webp. That and Jpeg XL being better and not wanting to support a Google monopoly

Speaking of, kinda pissed off about the banners being webp's now.

I totally agree with this subject. There is a manga website that mostly use WebP and avif for suitable browser. The experience is great and the image is clean that I can enjoy the high resolution. I thought the new technique will benefit all users. I have 1000M network but I still have to download the large files to offline, because the server can’t offer a decent online experience without cutting down too much images quality. I forget, but aren’t AVIF and WEBP exactly the two image file types that I always have to open with my browser if I’ve saved any of them?

Unless the images are very important to me, I then proceed to take screenshots and preserve the PNGs I thus get.

I’ve used a handful of default and non-default image viewers of different Ubuntu flavors, no luck.

My impression has been that certain sites use AVIF and WEBP in order to discourage downloading. I might be wrong, but that’s really the first thing that comes to mind on my end.

You may try this site. It's possible to offer those image format at the same time. Most software support webp thus only a few support avif.

The maximum GIF upload limit is 10MB. For source files over 20MB, I use ffmpeg and gifsicle to optimize the parameters as much as possible, but the quality loss is still unacceptable. This is currently the biggest obstacle preventing me from uploading a GIF gallery.
For JPG and PNG images, like many others, I prefer not to use WebP as a replacement.
However, the outdated GIF format really should be phased out. If we could support WebP, we would be able to compress 30+MB GIF down to under 10MB with hardly any noticeable quality loss to the naked eye
