Probably female. There was that incident where a vtuber accidentally revealed they were female after memes of them being a male and lost a large portion of their audience.

Its probably better for them not to reveal either way. Its like the masked youtubers, as soon as they reveal their faces they start to lose audience share.

I am Curious (Yellow). I am Curious (Blue). Swedish porn productions from the early days of feature porn movies. Based on the colors of the Swedish flag. Almost unbearable to watch now. But there we have the Yellow/Blue dynamic already formed. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

No one has voted in years but I'll update poll results for the record, since I'm bumping this.

Yellow was voted 3 natural voice, 2 tweaked voice, 2 can't tell.
Yellow was voted 2 guy, 4 girl, 1 sure girl.
Blue was voted 3 natural voice, 1 tweaked voice, 1 self-faked, 2 can't tell.
Blue was voted 2 sure guy, 3 girl, 2 sure girl.
(and 2 people preferred Yellow, 2 people liked both, and 3 people didn't know)

Okay major request, please DO NOT quote this post, anyone. This is so that I can remove or fix any links in this post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0qGaGSVkW0&t=2704 (better video quality, but blocked in Russia)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8GyWBg4gCc&t=2700 (subpar video quality, due to having to remove songs and re-encode an extra four times)

Now you guys can see and hear what I sound like, haha! This is just my test guy for this website though, it's separated from what I use everywhere else, to help obfuscate my real identity. It's visually only 20%~40% complete, but no telling if it will continue to evolve into the final form, as it's taken over 2 years just to reach this level.

What do people think of my voice? Does it sound like Yellow? If anyone wants to hear me talk more then someone needs to join my stream though because I usually don't talk when I'm by myself. I'll probably only be hanging around here for a few weeks to a few months, then I'll go back to my usual YouTube character account(s) where I play normal games.

I'm not going to watch the VOD but Kaela and Kronii sound like women. Do they control their voice a bit to do a character like any voice actor? Maybe. Probably. But it doesn't sound like a voice changer.
Same applies to any Hololive (EN) member I've listened to. Are there a ton of men with anime avatars on Twitch going after the easy money (and getting 10 viewers)? Sure. Are they in Hololive? I doubt it.

Your clip sounded like the typical HRT voice. Whether that's "natural" or through a voice changer I don't know, but it sounds "off" either way.

Thanks for voting! Seems like you voted: Yellow tweak girl, Blue person natural obvious girl. Pretty close to my own vote. I haven't watched too many Kaela videos recently (or of anyone, really) but I think she is tweaking her voice heavily these days to try to sound more girlish, while she didn't before (in the topic clips).

I'd previously noticed more hololive members going the other direction: they started out tweaking girly then reverted to their true voice after a year. (A fair number of them openly say this). Also, there are a fair number of hololive members who openly declare they heavily tweak at all times.

I'm not an expert on voice changers but have heard a few (I suspect you are at a similar level to me in your detecting powers). Do you think anyone in Hololive (JP) or Hololive (ID) uses voice changer?

I heavily suspect a particular person in Hololive (JP) uses voice changer (sounds like the most obvious I've ever heard, but I could be wrong) and is also a guy. There's also a technology issue regarding this: the newer voice changers sound way better. This person is old generation so they are using an old voice changer yet I presume they shouldn't change it at this point.

You can get easy money on Twitch? (I don't follow these things, but it would explain why there are so many people streaming on Twitch which is annoying to me, as from what little interaction I have with Twitch, I don't like it). For whatever reason, in the games I play, I don't think any Japanese player uses Twitch (but they all have VTubers on YouTube, which is why I do this, so I can hopefully talk to them in Japanese some day). American players seem to use Twitch, and I could never figure out what the point was (trying to make money?)

I did. And I watched the It takes Two VOD for a minute or two, so that's what I based my votes on, although I'm well familiar with Kronii's voice already. I think in that clip Kaela is clearly doing a sort of a "husky mysterious woman" voice. "Tweaking" is maybe a bit too strong of a word. More like she's controlling her pitch, like she's obviously speaking very slowly and quietly with the mic gain turned up which helps to have that sort of mellow mumbling voice, where as Kronii is speaking clearly out loud and then the two are balanced in the mix.

I don't speak the language so I can't tell. The easiest way to detect a voice changer is that it shifts parts of words or sentences that it's not supposed to. In regular speech it's normal for a speaker's pitch to vary, especially at certain words or expressions, while a voice changer can't detect this context and just shifts everything.

But as far as I can tell and from my limited exposure, nearly every JP member does that annoying squeaky chipmunk voice even if it's "naturally made". Which is also why I don't watch them. Some EN members for sure too, but outside of collabs I don't ever really watch anyone but Gura, Ame and Fauna, and I think of those three Gura and Ame speak with their natural voice, while Fauna pitches herself up (naturally). Then of course there's cancer like FUWAMOCO but I can't listen to that for more than 5 seconds without cringing and alt+f4'ing.

If I had to guess, I'd say Hololive recruits heavily on the basis of their ability to shift their voice like a voice actor, rather than using voice changers. That's the difference between an organization that does auditions and weeds out the people they allow under their brand. They can afford to require these skills, where as there is no barrier of entry for a random guy to jump on Twitch or Youtube with a vtuber model and voice shift themselves because they lack the talent to do it naturally. It's hard for me to imagine why Hololive would hire a guy that requires a voice changer in order to do their job and take on this unnecessary complications and the risk of it malfunctioning. Of course anything is possible, especially if it's an older Gen before Hololive became so corporate.

Well, that's the dream at least. Play video games and get paid for it. I did it for a brief while back in like 2015, and actually got a decent chunk of change too. But it's like the dream of being a Youtuber. There are a few millionaires and then 99.99% who don't get rich off of it. But people only see the successful ones, and that's why Youtube is filled with "Let's Play" channels with 10 views per video and Twitch with streams of 3 viewers.

I think the two clips have Kaela's true voice: all her first year of recordings sound like that. The gorilla voice is fake low, of course. I can't do a solid gorilla any lower than she can. We speak at almost the same frequencies, from gorilla, to typical, to little sister Kaela. I might be one or two semitones lower, at most. On the other hand, Kaela is significantly huskier than me, my voice can't make that quality.

I agree my voice is off and doesn't sound female, yet very few people are comfortable saying it's male. It's off either way, I think. That's just my normal, everyday voice.

I agree Kaela talks at comparatively low volume with high gain, especially from watching her other recordings. (I probably use similar settings for reference, although my gain is not as high as it could be. Low gain is better for audio quality as the background hiss is less).

I think there are different types of voice changers and the way they alter the sound is different. So you need multiple criteria to single out each type. I didn't know about your method, thanks. It's similar to one other method I know: if any background noise occurs such as cat or dog noises, those often get voice changed too and sound wack. Another method: listen for background hiss or artifacts that most voice changers create, especially when they speak without bgm. Another method: some of the highest quality voice changers have a big bank of voices that they use. If you recognize a bank voice, you could guess it's a voice changer even if you were not otherwise able to detect it.

Japanese players have more methods. I only need to open my mouth for one sentence, and a few of them immediately say "Wow there is no voice changer on a woman's voice!" I've been accused a fair number of times by English speakers that I use a voice changer, but in my life never from Japanese. 100% everyone says they know right away there's no voice changer.

Japanese speakers are also slightly more likely to think my voice is female, but they still can detect my voice is off, same as English speakers. I also tell everyone over and over that I'm a guy, but they always keep saying I'm a girl.

I also got tired of squeaky chipmunk Japanese female voices at some point. I prefer English female voices especially if they are real. From hololive (JP), Subaru uses her normal lower voice these days (after about 2 years of just a slightly higher voice). I also wouldn't be surprised if Botan's voice is real.

Gura's voice is super fake. I think this is widely known, but I forget how I know this. She just has a different voice type and fakes in a different way than the Japanese girls do. Not sure about Ame and Fauna. I don't like how Fuwamoco either looks or sounds so I forget what they sound like. Of the newer generation, Shiori Novella and Nerissa have good voices: Shiori is a way more girly Kaela, and Nerissa is a more girly Kronii (no point in making a guy/girl poll for them, but it's similar voice types).

I agree, hololive won't take voice changing people. It's just that one hololive (JP) member from original generation that maybe got in purely on personality, popularity, and being ancient and established. Hololive also sometimes takes people who already have 1 million watchers, like Shiori.

I mean this is Gura's real voice, her previous channel was pretty well known:

So yeah, she does a character too, but especially during Q&As, member streams and longer streams she gets closer and closer to this. Plus this was like a decade ago at this point and she's gotten older. She's also mentioned taking a lot of professional singing and voice lessons so who knows if her regular speaking voice has shifted in the process as well because she sounds kinda timid here.

Yeah listening in on artifacts is the easiest and quickest way to detect a cheap voice changer, but also one that I feel like is the weakest to the technology getting better. And with BMG, it's nearly impossible unless it's a really shitty voice changer. So it's better to try and learn to listen with ways that are less suspectible to being out-tech'd. I'm sure some AI pattern recognition thing in the future will be able to detect what to shift and what not to, but we're not there yet, especially during live broadcasts.

Japanese people are also full of shit. It's a cultural thing.

I believe that. It's the same as me finding it much harder to detect what a Japanese speaker is doing to their voice. Which is also why I don't believe them when they profess to have superhuman abilities at detecting voice changers or the lack thereof in seconds, if they also think you sound like a girl.

One Word Song Reveal【HentaiVerse】October 19 at 12:00 UTC (live stream link shall be at [youtube.com] youtube.com/live/YZeenHXONBk)

I'll probably stop streaming after this video or maybe the next, since I'm mainly here to test out technical aspects of making videos. So if anyone wants to laugh and throw tomatoes at me in the YouTube chat, this might be your only chance!

I probably won't talk unless there is someone to talk to, since I'm not talkative. I'll play my secret theme song though that magically always gives me Juggernaut on my armors. So other people can learn the same trick.

Oh yeah I forgot about Rui and Towa from Hololive (JP), I think they use fully real voices also. I like Rui's voice, and Rui in general. Towa looks nice but to me her voice sounds a bit like an older lady. Also, her stuffed animal voice, like Kaela's, sounds slightly like it could be a guy to me.

If I could draw a high quality 2D VTuber in any way I wanted, I'd probably be best off making a guy who looks like Astolfo or Rimuru, etc. But with the free 3D VRoids, I can only choose a default girl or default guy body, so it makes more sense for me to use the girl body.

There are odd moments here or there that you wouldn't hear from natural voices (some moments would stick out to me even if I wasn't primed to look for them), but it's not enough for me to form an opinion without listening much more. If you have a video of them straight up talking I'd take a look at that; I got annoyed waiting for them to talk in the original video since they're silent most of the video.
