Since we can't get back pagination, the main thing I'm missing is the number of search results tbh. "Found many results." doesn't much without clicking through every single page.
You mentioned calculating the overlap from the search operators is pretty intensive already.
Feature suggestion: If we can't have the number of results back, can we at least get the 2 GIDs of the newest and oldest results found on every page? That way we can tell 'approximately' where we are in the results range.
I already use the URL bar to navigate sometimes already (as I'm sure most in this thread does), having a range to reference from would resolve a good amount of the uncertainty/guesswork.

I would like to add that I am not brigading or using any 3rd party stuff. I just want the site to return to a facsimile of it's old effective functionality. From a user perspective things were working fine until yesterday and now they aren't. I would have quietly plodded along using the site had it not suddenly become a bear to use it as I had just a day prior. Even if page numbers isn't practical anymore I do hope you will actually work on solutions that let people effectively use the site and restore some of the lost functionality.

Yes, I'm sure most of the people complaining about a palpable degradation of their user experience are just brigadeering cunts that don't understand true genius. Honestly, responses like that piss me off. Seen them far too often, and they've never been uttered by any great and humble and understanding and confidence-inspiring man who has the best interests of his userbase in mind. Nor have they ever contributed to meaningful discourse or solved any problems.
Improvements at the cost of usability and accessibility are no improvements at all. I'll say it again: I'd much rather wait a minute or five for a search query to finish than navigate this utterly unintuitive garbage. And since you compared the update's alleged necessity to Google's crimes against humanity, I'll tell you the reason why I don't use the Youtube search function past the first five hits—it's unnavigateable shit.

I'm just another lurker that is more than willing to step out and say that I (or "we" as seen by the amount of ppl that came here to complain) would like to have some way of navigation between the first and last page. It doesn't have to be in the format of "numbering page" but just something we could use to navigate the vast amount of galleries. I understand that with this HUGE amount of data and at the rate that its growing, it would bound to be some problems and change is inevitable if you want to keep the site running. I really appreciate your effort for keeping the site running and I'm not here to lash out on you or anyone. I'm just want to say that we would really appreciate to have some kind of tool to help navigating the site, Heck it doesn't even need to be that good or streamline, just give us something to work with and that would be enough. Really hope you could add some navigating tools in the future (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/cry.gif)

I'm breaking my own forum post virginity after being a fan of e-hentai for decades (and a donator) just to say you "fixed" what wasn't broken and actively made my browsing experience worse. Great job!

I also agree about the result count. It's always better to know how many entries we're going through whenever we browse the search results. I'm sure doing a count query to certain filters would be viable provided how useful the info would be. As for GID for every page, I don't see that being possible at all. Cursor pagination is blind beyond previous/next GID cursors. It's like making a code manually query every next instance one-by-one, getting the next GID and using it for another query to get the next GID.

I have been using e-hentai for 10 years. I made some donations whenever I can. I never participate in the forum.
I came here just to say whoever came up with this change is a real idiot. Indexing without navigation is just a data dump.

QUOTE(Zexar @ Nov 3 2022, 05:55) I was using page numbers to autistically track how many galleries were being posted on average/median daily so I could have some idea of approximately how much more I was likely to have to look through (Which at the moment is 24/23/26 all time/past month/past week.) Without page numbers I'm lost after clicking "Next" once.
plz put back
I can't believe I'm complaining about an update that lets us do OR searches, but... I hate this change, too. Most of it I can deal with and learn to accept. But I need page numbers. If only because chronologically they helped me to find stuff from a certain period of time. Now I have no idea how many times I will need to hit next, and even the URL isn't helpful for pagination because it goes by gallery ID's. I can't take shortcuts to, say, go "halfway into the results" anymore, either. Awful change. Everything except the lack of page numbers is fine by me. Not sure that OR searching was worth it, at this cost. Just give us a percentage indicator based on blind GID's; i.e. gallery ID 50 (when there are hypothetically only 100 galleries on E-H) would show up as '50%', even if it wasn't actually 50% of the way through search results. Having the user manually check what the newest GID on the site is and then divide that by two to go halfway back is just stupid. Also, I miss the 'downvoted tags' thing, but it isn't necessary if OR searches work for the things I was using it for. This post has been edited by dragontamer8740: Nov 3 2022, 18:53

I see what you mean. I was originally thinking it might be possible since you can still navigate to the 'last page', now I see it's just doing "prev=1", similarly with the 'first page'. Damn I honestly can't see how you can solve this without relying on the usual indexes, which gets back to the performance issue. Edit: Actually, can't the query just get the first result when searching chronologically and reverse-chronologically? It'll add 2 more queries for each page but is it still viable at least? QUOTE(sakuracircle @ Nov 3 2022, 17:36) Bad analogy. Taking some pages over a minute to load is definitely not "a car working great". This is one of the issues
Does anyone has pages that take more than a minute to load? I personally had them load from one to three seconds.

This thread is... a lot.
I came here to post about wanting the page selector back, but clearly I'm late to the party.
Here's a possible compromise:
If we don't want to take on the additional computational load of page counts/pagination, could we get a slider that interpolates GID from the first page's "next" value down to 1 (or better yet, down to the earliest GID in the result set) in regular increments?
I think most use cases don't need full-on pagination, just the ability to easily (i.e. 1-2 clicks, without editing URL query parameters) navigate to roughly X% through the result set. Obviously, every particular search result set isn't uniformly distributed in GID-space, but I think that the slider would be a good compromise between allowing people to navigate to an arbitrary point in the middle and not rewriting the whole indexing system.

Yet another annoyed old af lurker looking to chime in on the update. HOWEVERI understand the logic behind it. The old system was on its last legs due to the sheer size of the site, so of course a new one was needed. I find that FabulousCupcake's solution is a good compromise. You can even "calculate" page numbers based on GIDs returned from the search results. That said, you might want to rollback it temporarily to squash the bugs and iron out the details, and use an open beta domain (with proper announcement!) before implementing changes. Else, you get these kind of dogpiles on the forums.

I doubt Ten will be able to read this, but I would suggest a feature to let GID pointers be saved in tag filters to easily navigate back to them.
People keep insisting on using page numbers to navigate back to where they last stopped but even that is a guessing game and an unreliable way to navigate as well. Wanting to go halfway or to 75% of the results is just as unreliable and impractical guessing game that can be replaced by GID pointers because we all know that today's page 10 of results are probably page 30+ in a couple weeks and we'll start blind guessing them until we hit the jackpot.
We only got used to that and it's harder to switch when there isn't a better alternative to random jumps yet. Thus, my suggestion. The current problem is that GIDs are like phone numbers, we shouldn't bother to remember them and instead a feature in filter tags.

QUOTE(sakuracircle @ Nov 4 2022, 00:45) There is: Throw a couple more thousand dollars per month to get more expensive servers instead of optimizing the search engine.
I think... I personally would rather wait an one more 1 minute than keep pressing the next button so like a such monkey and wait for the thumbnails slowly load. In fact, 99.99% of users will not need to wait more than 10 seconds in searching. And removing the page number function is more likely to let us waste an hour until the blood supply is insufficient. Even the js script recommended just more than convert the problem to how to precisely click on the 1px vertical bar. This site is nsfw and are not running a multi-million dollar mobile app that needs to place ads efficiently. Humans who face nsfw content are always patient.

Never had any issues with loading speeds. Anyone I asked from my own circles also never had any issues. Everything loads. Everything works. Other porn hosting sites wish they had servers that efficient. Not anymore, I guess.

I wonder why developers are so tend to make user's life worse with each UI update. Everything was great for several years and now BOOM --remove pages because why fucking not?

If you made donations to the site where are your stars friend? Even 25$ gets you a bronze star. I have no complaints for the new search engine

This is my first time commenting on the forum but I just wanted to say removing page number is an awful idea.
I don't care if there is some mathematical way you can change the url numbers to do what you wanted to do before. I am not going to take the difference between two 8 digit number then divide by 2 while all my blood is in my cock. I have like a hundred pages of favorites and now I need to click 'previous' button repeatedly for no goddamn reason.
God awful design choice. I literally don't know why this was even implemented. IDK in what world someone would think this is a good idea.

QUOTE(Tenboro @ Nov 3 2022, 04:19) I'm not actually reading this thread anymore due to the heavy brigadeering. I get that it broke your favorite viewing tool, but all the reasons for why "bring back page number" isn't long-term technically feasible was already answered in the first few pages of the thread.
There are some bugs being fixed (missing galleries in favorites, some uploader search stuff and some navigation stuff), as well as a function to address the (ostensible) biggest gripe about not being able to jump to the middle of search results, but these things aren't written, tested and deployed overnight. I will however hold off on deploying the update to EH until it's ready.
I think it's really disingenuous to call people who have been lurkers and not posting on the forums posting for the first time being upset about a change "brigading". Yes you addressed why you did what you did but in all honestly it's not a satisfactory answer, and people are going to rightfully keep complaining about a sudden and bad user experience change. Looking at the member sign up date, no one posting here is a new member, these aren't new accounts, many of these people upset are people who've been here 5+ years.
