Assuming you are talking about ehviewer or tachiyomi or something similar, you'll have to ask those why it's not working and if they can fix it.

I'll be the another one complaining about the change to the page selector.
But only because it makes it harder to look for something.

If an author has a long collection of items, and you are going trough all of them to view them, to check which ones you are missing/which ones are better quality. I have several times forgot where i am in the list and where i should go now, cause i can't simply say, oh i just need to check for page 5 and onwards for instance, once i have a million tabs open.

I don't know what were the technical issues you had before with the previous system. But regardless, this change is a downgrade, a regression even, that hampers the usability of the site, and should be fixed.

Tenboro I have a serious question. How exactly does the search work, does it just reference a list of all galleries and subtract those that do not match the search?
I am asking because I have been thinking about pages (Which I still like more BTW).
If I search a single tag, the gid results will always fall on the same section, so no matter if I go for GID 40005886 or 40005892, I will always see both galleries on the same list, correct?
So, my question is, aren't these gallery results in page format already, just without a direct number result? Like no matter what combination of tags, I put in, once I hit next that list of galleries is static and will not change, right?
So, wouldn't just adding a simple counter function for whenever you press next, just be indicative of page number?
Therefore, wouldn't page numbers be possible without slowing down navigation due to the search results ordering themselves in pages anyways?
I am not sure though how that works, also maybe since it is able to reference the first page in the search using the first button. Wouldn't the system also know when a new page is added in the front, therefore creating a rudimentary form of pages by referencing the first page of the search compared to how many times the user hit the next button?
Hopefully you will read this, as it may give some insight into how the search function works with the new system and why pagination is impossible, or it may result in a rudimentary form of pagination for the site without increasing server load.

I'll also take some time to address some of the most common criticisms.

(Not having a page selector is worse than having a page selector / Not having an exact result count is worse than having an exact result count) and this update is therefore a step backwards UI-wise!

Well, no shit. They weren't removed because I thought it would be an improvement, but because with the increasing size of the index, it was getting more and more expensive processing-wise to provide these things, especially considering that the traffic has been significantly increasing as well.

The site does not have the budget for an additional full rack of high-end servers just to provide the existing functionality with the existing limits

Not sure if this has been brought up already or not, but if favorite searching is going to need some extra reworking anyway, would it be possible to also look into making category searches possible within favorites?

Perhaps make it a normal parameter on top of the system we already have so kill two birds with one stone and also make ~category:Artistcg ~other:"Western CG", ~category:"Gamecg" ~other"Full Color" possible for those who want to search Full Color without some of the filters inherently baked into the tag?, or similarly, search ~Cosplaying ~Category:Cosplay

I'll add another vote to bring back the page numbers. I definitely see a use for the new setup, but as a supplement, not a replacement. Not having page numbers is counter-intuitive. We just think in terms of pages. This is especially true for the favorites page. If I leave and come back, I can estimate how many pages I am into my list. I haven't a clue about dates.

The issue with paging is that to know whats on page 53, you have to know whats on all 52 pages before it. The new system, doesn't need to know that as it ommits anything with a higher gid, it doesn't care about whats on the 'pages' before it.

While this might work ok for single tag searches, having complex title matches + tag search + exclusion + uploader comment searching makes it very complex especially with the scale of the site

The three things highest on the gallery system priority list are "favorite system rework", "tagging system rework" and "gallery metadata format rework", and the biggest impact will probably be the first one, so it's not unlikely that is next. At which point, I would look into enabling more of the search options in favorites. But I haven't fully decided yet, and we're probably looking at February at earliest to start working on it.

when I search for a keyword, I don't know if it's 20 or 2000 pages, if there are too many pages I would narrow down the search further. but it doesnt show up, so not being able to find anything this way.

February? dam.....then again, holiday season around the corner and new search engine surely still has some early bugs to prioritize so fair enough I guess.

Now since everyone and their cat is already throwing their (well deserved) hatred at the new search system I might as well make my comment on it.

While I enjoy the new smoother and cleaner HUD design for searching, to be honest the new search engine is a load of poop - I honestly cannot think of any better way of saying it. For starters the page system was extremely well designed as is since it was easy to navigate as a simple anon on the site. You didn't need to know dates and times and reference numbers just to find a specific artbook or doujinshi, however now the site runs like a image randomizer. The site navigation has no support for new or random users.

While my personal opinion likely doesn't matter to the site-admins as a random anon however I would rather have the old stuff back, I feel like I am scrolling through a low-quality rule-34 porn site with no design or user compatibility. Even low quality scan sites have better navigations.
