It would in fact make sense for the forum/topic view since, like galleries, new threads are added and bumped to the front, but it does not make sense for posts since they are added to the back and remain where they were originally placed. (And yes, I know you are being sarcastic.)

User encrypted bookmark... this tells all you need how far out of touched the hardcore dev is when it comes to computers.

If you use a shared computer, you either care enough about your privacy to protect yourself against people who snoop in your stuff, or you don't. This is for people who do. If you don't, that's fine, just be prepared to have "the talk".

And honestly, if you do use a shared computer and don't want to spend all of ten minutes setting up a simple secured environment to protect data at rest against casual snooping by your sister, boss or significant other, you deserve every minute of that talk.

If you provide some example searches, we might be able to a) tell you that you are doing it wrong (and probably how), and b) check if the new search engine is doing it wrong.

I'm just spitballing here but, would it be possible to add pagination back to favorites if we hosted a localized version ourselves? Sort of like H@h but personalized for favorites (not sure how h@h works).

Uh, sure? If you make a local index, you can do whatever you want.

That said, I'm not actually done looking at potential visual indicators for where you are in a result, and the ultimate solution will probably be different for favorites and other searches since the underlying search mechanism is very different. But this won't be Soon™, it'll be a little while at least, after the update has been full deployed (maybe tomorrow), all the old indexes have been cleaned up, and any remaining wrinkles have been worked out.

Updated galleries get a new GID. Galleries cannot be updated after a year has passed.

You'll still be 30k results deep.

If the gallery with GID 1234 is updated and you are on the page with &next=1234, the result page will be exactly the same if you refresh it, since the number in the URL is the first/last gallery to *not* be included in the result, and it does not necessarily have to exist.

If the gallery with GID 1234 is updated and you are on a page that *contains* this gallery (say &next=1235), the result page will also be exactly the same, except that this gallery will be gone, since it got bumped up to the start of the results (with a new GID).

Those have nothing to do with searches. I think I can confidently bet they will remain just as they are.

When cleaning invalid tag combinations (like Speechless+English being literally invalid, and Futanari+Shemale often being the result of one being mistaken for the other) it's smart to go through the low power cases as well before some idiot or farmer can blindvote them into being searchable.......but this just doesn't work now that tick that box only filters down to galleries where both tags are low power.

Being able to search downvoted tags was similarly useful for vigilante works, it now requires checking someone's personal tagging history to clean up after them if someone with a decently high MP misunderstands a tag (like what happened here, or the ongoing witch hunt on Filming that has to be reverted if Miles holds his foot down on keeping the tag definition the way he interpreted it).

I understand that these are fairly niche applications as the majority of users couldn't care less about doing vigilante work, but can I at least know if restoring these options can be looked into later down the line?

Another thing that I find pretty weird: for years the narrative has always been that OR searches or exclude-only searches just weren't possible because it would strain the server too much but page numbers were taken for granted, now we're being told it's actually the other way around with exclude-only and OR searches freshly introduced but all these old options removed. Is this complete 180 really just maintaining that we just can't have everything but re-distributing the load to fit popular demand for OR and exclude-only or is there more to it?

Now that the GID is actually useful and can be searched for, can archive downloads have the [GID] appended like H@H downloads do too? Consequently that should also do the same for torrents, i guess?

For example, let's say a gallery was originally posted without the 'milf' tag. The 'milf' tag is added a week later, but I was up to date on checking all the 'milf' galleries. Is there a way for me to easily find this recently updated gallery? (Ideally by having a search that sorts by most recent tag update rather than gallery id, but I'm close to certain that wouldn't be possible).


Next, let's say I'm a big fan of the 'elf' tag and I want to be up to date on the new releases. If I search just "elf", the URL is https://e-hentai.org/?f_search=elf .
However, the new index system allows an easier time to always be up to date: at the time I'm writing this post, the latest gid that has the elf tag is 2372768. This url: https://e-hentai.org/?f_search=elf&next=2372769 (latest gid that has this tag, +1) currently shows the exact same galleries as the previous url. The difference is that, if a new 'elf' gallery is added, the first url will display it while the second url will stay the exact same as previously.
The second url holds an advantage: let's say you're up to date on elf galleries and keep that url as a browser favorite or something else. Then you can come back some time later and browse through the new elf galleries you haven't seen yet by going through "Previous" pages.
From a user standpoint, that's a new possibility that wasn't available before.
Right now, you can get that second url manually (check the 'most recent gid' with the search tags you want, click "Next", replace the "next=" gid in the url with the 'most recent gid' + 1).
I wanted to point out that this was a new option users might want to use but might not realize exists yet. If this feature seems to be of interest to enough users, there might be a point to add an option/button that allows you to switch directly from the standard search url (https://e-hentai.org/?f_search=elf) the the indexed one (https://e-hentai.org/?f_search=elf&next=2372769). If anything, this should be really easy to do with a script.
I hope my explanation wasn't too messy.

Also, I came across one case of unexpected search behavior: I have about 500 Favorites and only 45 of them do not have the bondage tag. If I search "-bondage" through my favorites, the results are split in several pages (23 on first page, 5 on second, 8 on third etc...). I assume this is unintended.
I could only reproduce this behavior for tags that a significant portion of my favorites share, so that might be a factor to make this behavior happen.

Finally, I really hope some sort of solution is found to deal with low power tags and expunged galleries now being separated from regular searches. As someone who used to always have both of those on, I now have to do 4 searches instead of one (without expunged nor low-power, with both, with expunged only, with low-power only). This is a major inconvenience.

Why does it matter how many galleries are left? I've never understood why people are having trouble with this.

I now have or searching, I have negation only searching, I have fake tag: namespace. Searching is objectivly better now. I find better results, I can start with oldest first. I open the galleries that look interesting and then click next.

At no point do I care if I have x results left. If I'm done with my search for now I leave the tab open or bookmark it. And now with jump I can just randomly go somewhere into the results.

The old search and pages offer no benifit over this, was I up to page 32 or 23 last time, oh it was neither. Let me skip an arbitary number of galleries further in just like I can do with jump... oh wait.

hope by some miracle it can return even in limited form. And will make sure to full read your updates a bit more when major changes happen. Again sorry and thank you for your hardwork.

It's a bit hard guessing by date would be nice just jump via number of results reading your statement about cost+effective i guess something will change and happen later.

People have pointed out this particular weakness, so I'm looking into a different approach of dealing with weak tags. Stay tuned for that.

OR searches wasn't possible with the fundamental design of the old search engine, but it's not just possible but very cheap with the new one. For tags anyway, it would be very wonky to support it for anything else.

Exclude-only searches probably could have been added to the old search engine the way I ended up implementing it, but it would have made pagination even wonkier than it was.

The pagenumber addressing had to go anyway, so it's not really a tradeoff as such.

I doubt it will go above 10. Maybe it could be a donator thing, but not in general anyway.

If you use an exclusion that removes most entries from a result, you can see this, yeah.

Hi, I have been using the EHViewer app exclusively since it is just a way better user experience on mobile. If solely for the fact, that you can full screen and that it automatically loaded the next x search results when scrolling down a search.

The app hasnt been updated and is not working with the new update anymore. Is there any way to actually get to a next page via the search field? I have tried next=some number, but I genuinely have no idea what numbers I would put there, since the app doesnt event show any IDs. How many didgitd are they, or did I miss interpret how to go to another page? This whole thing 8s just really frustrating and sad,, since this was by far the best experience I have ever had with doujins.
