Anyone knows some good affordable router options? Mine just went dead for some reason, so I'm stuck with my phone + cellular network.

Mine's just been a Pi4 hooked up to a switch and a WAP for a little while now. And before that it was an old workstation hooked to to a switch and a WAP lol.

For something more traditional and fairly cheap an Archer C6 flashed with OpenWRT should be decent.

If you go the C6 route it looks like you'll need to make sure you don't get the V4 (or higher) if you want OpenWRT support. Thankfully v2 and v1 look different than the v4, but v3 looks identical to v4.

I've been using wrt1900ac's, but might try a C6 next time I need one.

Worth noting that it seems infinitely easier to get a working serial port on a WRT1900AC. It's a shame the 1900AC uses Marvell firmware though.

Ended up getting an Asus RT-AX3000 V2. I know ASUS routers aren't exactly top-notch, but it's the only thing they have in a local shop around my place and I need a replacement ASAP.

Asus did have premium routers but they have weird glitches occasionally now.

Not like netgear throw it out the window level of nonsense but Asus is not as shiny as it once was.

I am using a high end Asus router atm that is mostly good.

I set up a nice wrt1900AC with OpenWRT for a friend to use. Even tuned the fan scripts so the fan ran quietly but reliably on their specific router (some ans are noisier at certain speeds than others, I've found).
They complained that they were "only" getting 500mbits/sec on speedtest.net when they were getting 800 or so when they hooked directly to their modem instead, and proceeded to go back to stock firmware.

Their speed went up, but I wish I could have stopped them.

They browse these forums occasionally.
I hope you see this. You know who you are.

This is a problem with OpenWRT, and especially lower powered devices. Did you try enable Software flow offloading? I assume no hardware flow offloading support.

We did, yes. Bumped it up 50mbits/sec or so.

Wasn't enough for this person, for some reason, even though you absolutely never are going to approach 800mbits/sec on *anything* on the web.

I'm happy to sacrifice a lot of speed for my stuff to do what i fucking tell it to do.

I guess i could reach 800mbit/s on really healthy torrents and some downloads.
Good to know that a 1900AC can reach 500mbit/s though, mine has 2 stronger cores instead of 1 core, so if i ever get fiber (realistically never), i should be able to reach speeds that are more than enough. Although with cake SQM it might be harder.

Also daily fuck you to Marvell

RT-AX88U Pro. They technically class it as mid end, they have higher end products that cost a fortune.

*face palm*

I just realized I forgot to depreciate it for tax. I might still be able to claim a small amount next year.

Privacy spying issues blah blah blah aside, I heard they are pretty bad as well? Certainly had some connection issues when I'm visiting my friend's home.

I don't remember for sure, but it was somewhere around there.I use a 1900ACS and I think I was able to hit closer to 600-650 IIRC.

I'll pay my daily marvell "Fuck you" as well.

Performance wise its okay. The wifi is pretty average.

Privacy wise, there are some weird security certificate and VPN drop out shenanigans. It could just be misconfiguration somewhere in their firmware. Get some weird security certificate injection notifications because it wants to use Beijing signed superior certificates at random.

They sold them at a loss, so its hard to find a better performing router for the price.

[github.blog] https://github.blog/2023-03-09-raising-the-...egins-march-13/

I think they are trying to imply there may be a way to do that 2FA shit without a phone, but I don't understand the technical mumbo jumbo (and maybe they're not saying enough in the first place).

Did anybody enable and use 2FA on github without a phone, and thus could explain how to do it (I'm on Windows, though I could run a linux VM "from the cd") ?

Basically you need a totp client, it's the best form of 2fa and doesn't require any personal information like your phone number and theres hundreds of FOSS clients on all platforms.
My password manager (keepassxc) supports totp too.

I keep putting off doing it, because I fucking hate github already and seriously want to let my account there die, except that employers like to look at it.

Thanks. I used something called TOTP from firefox addons (unverified though), and it went through.
If it was unsecure, well I would have lost my account either way I guess.
