Moldova was part of the Russian Empire from 1812 to 1917, and part of the USSR from 1940 to 1991. Putin wants it all back.

There are no specific justifications for this, it's a simple power grab.

They protected an incredibly small Russian enclave in Moldova for decades after the USSR collapsed with 1,500 Russian soldiers defending the "breakaway state", just to have a pretext to invade and someday take all of Moldova's land back in the name of "peacekeeping" and protecting Russian lives. It's the same "peacekeeping" pretext they used to invade Ukraine as long as there were a couple of places in the east where Russia had relatively recently relocated some Russian families (during the USSR.)

Incidentally, Moldova and Georgia just applied to join the EU because of this.

We almost lost e-h because of whatever the EU was doing, with moldova applying to be part of the EU that means the bullshit starts again.

The process of joining the EU takes a very long time, I think Russia poses a more immediate threat to the existence of this site than the EU.

Military concerns often take into consideration terrain. Taking over Moldova would give the newly captured Ukraine territory a mountainous or hilly wall between them and NATO (eg Romania).

They're not getting to western Ukraine any time soon. Moldova applying to join the EU is the bigger problem.

I was watching one show. They said if Russia attempted to create a 'Greater Russian Federation' it would bankrupt them unless the alliance between multiple countries was successful in disrupting the petro-dollar as the defacto reserve currency. That would leave the US with a hot potato of gigantic debt.


They said Russia / China / India / Iran / Pakistan / Turkey were on board however I can't find anything recent about India. Would India risk an alliance with China? Pakistan is becoming a province of China. That alliance is 1/3 of the world economy, if they are able to get to 50%+ then the US will be in trouble. US globalised and moved all of its production offshore without really thinking of the consequences.
