TV just isn't like it used to be.

I had a friend who taught me about Betacam and how the tv stations in Australia used it.

It was what they used to record stuff.

Yeah, Beta and its variants like Betacam were amazingly popular with TV stations here, too.

I would kill for a betacam VTR and some old anime tapes.
Laserdisc wouldn't be too bad either. Similar (or marginally lower) quality. I need a player.

In what sense do you mean?

Because film is easiest upscaled via telecine (aim a camera at film as it is being projected) or by scanning and digital rescaling.

VIdeo capture followed by digital rescale is a possibility.

Telecine was how they played back movies on TV back in the day. They had to do a 3:2 pulldown for 60Hz countries, and usually just played the film about 4% fast in PAL countries to hit 25 fps (integer half of 50 hz).

In a way that's almost better, because interlaced PAL video was capable of capturing entire film frames which can be recombined to get the original sources.

That's why I don't like or use a lot of private trackers that seem to have some sadistic attitude towards inactive users.

Maybe it's to prevent people from selling accounts or something?

The only private tracker I've been able to keep my membership on is one where admins have actually told me on IRC they like me and that I'd have to do something really bad to get banned. And unfortunately their selection of anime is rather limited (by design; they don't want to become yet another anime tracker, although some nostalgic titles do get uploaded there).

It specializes in off-the-air tape recordings from the dawn of the VCR through probably about 2010, with an emphasis on the 90s.

Mags, if you still want in, I think I can get you in if you hop on IRC sometime. They don't really do invites anymore but I've had luck asking the admins to let someone in recently. I remember you posted the eric andre 'let me in' gif last time I brought them up.
