The VHS dub of Double Vision used to be the best selling anime tape in the entire United States.
Really?
Neat.
Do you have a citation for that? Doesn't really matter much but I'd be interested to see the rest of that list if you know where to find it.
It's a good episode, yeah - and a lot of neat stuff happens in it, and it's visually gorgeous, and the music is good.
I just still think "Red Eyes" (6) hit harder on an emotional level; it left me a sobbing wreck and can still do so on repeated viewings, because it hit so many points that I feel strongly about regarding human greed, the ethics of making robots, and "the meaning of life" for lack of a better phrase. Not "why do we live," but "what does it mean to live."
Also it's just really a massive storm of emotions for the whole second half of "Red Eyes." It puts into words a lot of stuff that "Moonlight Rambler" (5) suggested/hinted at. It also served as a cathartic ending for the story that started in "Moonlight Rambler," and was finally an episode that ended on a somewhat positive note after so much darkness. Though Sylia's last line in that episode just floored me. There's so much cruelty in the world the series presents, and the episode kind of drives home the power dynamic of humans essentially making a new species capable of independent thought and then enslaving them... it highlights the helplessness of the 33-S type robots in juxtaposition to the combat ones, and thus humanizes them in a way that it's easy to sympathize with them. They're as powerless against Genom and combat models as humans are, and their mortality is quite apparent.
Giving them actual blood was an excellent touch as well.
Spoiler text - Highlight to read...
Also, seeing Priss's sheer humanity, compared to the monstrosity that Mason became as he essentially discarded his own humanity in exchange for ultimate power, said a lot for me about peoples' capacity for good and evil. For all of the evil things people can do, it sort of made me hopeful that people like her might exist.
To me, philosophy and character study matters more than any amount of action, so maybe that's why I like Moonlight Rambler as much as I do.
Anyway, yeah, Double Vision. A good episode - and great music - but 5 and 6 were still better done. If Double Vision had been a full hour, I think it would have probably had more time for character interactions and I'd probably have a higher opinion of it; there's still a lot of awesome stuff there.
There were also times in the episode that I would have written differently; when Reika walks out of the room with Linna/Rinna tied up, I would think she might have offered to help, or at least to be there for her. She knew a lot that Reika never realized she did - and she was the only one to witness her murder. It just feels like a lot went unsaid that probably should have been said.
