No one was using my non-sequitur thread correctly so I stopped caring
I think some of the good staff went to the spin off company. Gainax went a bit weird with drug deals and shady business practices after a while. No longer do they make an honest living of soft-core hentai.
I used to love Gainax but they haven't produced much in quite a while. All the founders and top artists left.
It was literally a case of gathering talented creatives to make anime but that had personality issues and zero interest in business operations and management. As a result there was no governance or oversight of management and it went wrong multiple times.
The president that took over most recently, turned Gainax into a literal harem and told young teenagers that if they wanted to join the industry they had to sleep in his apartment with him. The previous president blew $1m on nobody knows. Before that's president blew the money on hookers and snow and was arrested for tax evasion.
They didn't have very strict criteria for promoting management. Tomohiro Maki that created the 'women's dormitory' aka apartment harem, had previously been the voice actor recruitment manager. Then he added to the contracts of all female voice actors had to live in his apartment.
The presidents also sold off the rights to all their other works without consulting the founders. That is why they can't make any of the sequels and follow up series they promised. They also said they would destroy the Evangelion production materials unless Anno gave them 1m dollars.

Aren't you just complaining that our free speech isn't edgy enough for you? IMO, it's good to be able to relax sometimes.

Posted this in the other thread because we were talking about disney, but in the U.S. animation is dead and the corpse is rotting.
If anime peaked in the 90's, american animation peaked in the 60's or early 70's in terms of production quality and style.
If we ignore "production quality," the 80's/90's were pretty cool, too, though. Much better writing for things like the Batman animated series/Animaniacs.
Yes, I am aware that this movie's scratchy feel is because of them cheaping out by using photocopiers to color the original storyboard sketches. It looks great anyway.
