Not really seeing much on topic discussion in the last few weeks, so that's probably enough for this thread

(Note: thread was merged; this was the original post of a new thread. Original title: "The US is dying, but so is Anime")

The racist mods apparently value the color of a thread's skin more than the content of its character.
Character, of course, being the 16 pages of content that started on page 1.

So let's try this again, shall we?

This thread is now about anime OVAs from the 80s and 90s

I'm thinking about watching Key the Metal Idol, unless anyone can tell me why I shouldn't. But I'll have to finish with Dirty Pair first.
I really cannot describe how much I love Bubblegum Crisis. It had some really great imagery, ideas, and music. And it featured actual adult women; what the fuck.

We will never get that style or production quality back now that generic moeblobs and cookie-cutter isekai have taken over.
Maybe if the studios weren't being overworked and underpaid, it would help with the quality, at least. Computers are part of the issue, too.

Cookie cutter/sameface syndrome example (from a somewhat recent manga):

Cyber City Oedo 808 vs Bubble Gum Crisis

Case for Bubble Gum Crisis; Priss wants to genocide the boomers. It has city pop which is hot again.

Case for Cyber City; So bad ass. Its like maximum 80s. Jump a sports car off a bridge and shoot people with a giant magnum gun in the mid air kind of 80s.

I liked the emotional aspect and mature subject matter of Bubblegum Crisis; I don't really care about the action in it (although I do appreciate impressive animation, like when priss jumps off a ledge in episode 6 and they do a 3D rotation by hand on ones).

Maybe it's because I also like Chobits, but it hit hard emotionally in episodes 5 and 6. The first few episodes would be forgettable if not for their payoff in episode 6.
I just tend to have more fun with thoughtful shows. Maybe it's just because it feels like there aren't as many of them.

The music was a bonus, but some of my favorite tracks are the least city pop-like ones ("Mad Machine"). Can't really escape the DX-7 though. And I still will never understand vaporwave.

Of course I also like pleb stuff like harems (tenchi muyo, jitsu wa watashi wa) and whatever you'd call Ranma/Inuyasha (only read the manga). So I'd still be happy to watch an action packed one; I will peek at Cyber City Oedo because I'd heard it mentioned before.

Bubblegum Crisis 2032 (the original) was quite amazing when it first came out especially if you were a fan of Blade Runner. For example, the anime's panning OP and score was quite similar to Blade Runner. Although seeing my first boomer as a bit of a shock since I was expecting the anime version of replicants. What was really good was that four of the female voice actor leads could sing. As a result, each episode had a unique OP vocal and the anime itself had many vocal soundtracks and BGM variants to support the vocal releases.

Oddly, the music video version of "Say Yes" is the most lively version. The studio version feels flat since the live version had much better musicians playing the electric guitars. I wonder what happened to that one song in the studio that day.

There is tons of garbage. Sure.
But the best stuff then is (subjectively) better than the best stuff now.
And the near-death of the OVA led to stagnation. The economic bubble bursting didn't help to encourage risk taking or innovative shows, either.

And thus the death of the OVA.
And yeah, video games and movies have also gone to shit.

I'm not just saying that because things are changing, I'm saying it because our media culture has entered a state of stagnation here in the states, too.

You're talking about the dub, right? Because the VA's did not do the music as far as I can tell in the Japanese version.

I didn't bother with the dub. Not yet, at least.
Do they do the machine gun talking "Speed Racer/Mysterious Cities of Gold" thing to synchronize to lip movements outside of the songs? Or were we finally past that point?

In any case, the near-universal availability of subs and JP audio (or multitrack audio) is a boon for some series. I think BGC is one of them. The squeakier the VA's, though, the more debatable it is. In that limited sense I am glad it's not 1992.

I was describing the Japanese version. The voice actors have credits for the vocal songs and they also sing live (not lip sync) in the music videos. Kinuko Oomori (Priss) even had a music career before doing voice acting for Priss. The only voice actor that couldn't sing was the one for Sylia.

Singer credits for the OP/ED listed below. When it says "Knight Sabers" that means the group of voice actors sing as a team rather than solo. The voice actors did far more than just the OP/ED songs as the BGC OAV series released quite a few soundtrack CDs with other vocal tracks.
[www.animenewsnetwork.com] https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycloped...nime.php?id=201

If you can, do get the music video set from BakaBT or some other archival site. These are well done and not the lip sync drek from other anime shows. The voice actors really do sing live and the band plays live. You see them all do it.

My favorite BGC fanfic series tries very hard to remain canon with character personalities:

I only read the manga, but apparently gintama is one of the few exceptions to the "there is no good new anime" rule.
But now the series is ended.

I did wonder about the group credit on a couple of the songs. And yeah I have FLAC copies of the soundtrack already. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together.
And I will look around when I have a little more time. It might be on archive.org, too.

I have not watched the show and I know nothing about it. But for what it's worth, the only girl (or person for that matter) I know of who watched RWBY wasn't quite right in the head.

I know someone who tried to talk to me about it and he seemed alright in the head. Has a failing marriage and fucks his coworker. Has a couple kids. In his 30s.

Oh, well maybe he isn't really completely alright. The other person I know who watched it was a friend's daughter. This was a few years ago and she was 12 at the time.

2000s saw a huge divide between popularity and quality. Naruto, One Piece, Bleach were the standard for commercial success and it appealed to the most abhorrent of anime fans. Then the moe, slice of life fad came and set the stage with stuff like Azumanga, which was good, but not as amazing as most people tout it for at the time. Then it devolved into crap like Lucky Star, K-On, Nichijou, and the like that.devolved from the humor and dialogue that made Azumanga decent, into "cute girls doing cute things" that has only worsened to this day. I think Demon slayer and One Punch Man are the only series I put any effort into watching recently, and they're not anywhere good as people say they are, in my opinion, but better then most of the things I see released. I think Kill la Kill is the last thing I watched that I felt was genuinely worth investing in from start to finish. Mostly I watch some early to mid 2000s series or go back to something from the 90s, or 80s. Really, the problem isn't in the anime, so much as the people who watch/read it wanting the saccharine, copypasted, cutesy, safe tripe we see so much if today. One thing I like that old OVAs often got right we're old cyberpunk, dystopian future settings. Armitage III, Dominion Tank Police, A.D. Police Files. I haven't seen anything in 10 to 15 years in the genre to really shine. Which is tragic given how time seems to only make the genre better to create around with new technology, social issues, politics and more people watching and reading than ever before.

That's how I feel, too.
We are now two years short of a decade out from there, and I see nothing worthwhile being animated.
Non-animated manga, yeah, there's still a handful of okay things, but it feels like that's started drying up, too. I hope I'm wrong about that.

That's sort of true, but I think that there can be times where the demand is there but unseen because there are enough people will still just swallow whatever garbage a company puts out, and appealing to the remaining demand is harder than appealing to the lowest common denominator who can be counted on to consume mindlessly.
Apple does this in tech. Hollywood does it in movies daily with its shitty sequels and new star wars movies/merch.

Your post started off as trash opinions and then improved as I read it.
You don't need an apostrophe in "were," there, though.
I do see more bits and pieces of the nightmare societies a lot of cyberpunk stuff focuses on falling into place all the time.

"Cute girls doing cute things" can be entertaining, but not when everyone does it and does it so poorly. And it's definitely not cerebral/thought provoking like the best stuff is.
