IDK, but if they do they've taken the Phantasy Star II remake route (which is a bad one).
The permadeath in that game was only meaningful because the character was actually perma-dead.
Although I already knew they were taking a bad route when they decided to kill ATB and let Nomura direct games.
He's a funny guy with an interesting sense of humor, but I do not like his games. FF9 was one of my favorites (the others were 3 and 5 for job systems; 9 had a nicer story though) and I think it might be partially because of Nomura's lack of involvement in the project.
Even the original version of 7 was annoying and in many ways a step down from 6 - which was basically a show run by Yoshitaka Amano (the guy who does all the 'whispy' looking art for all the early games).
Neither had good gameplay, but 6 had a coherent story and characters that I liked more on average - including protagonists I didn't want to strangle (Cloud).
I really felt something for pretty much all the characters in that game. Except possibly Gau. But whatever.
I especially felt for Terra, as I am sure I was supposed to.
The only characters in FF7 that I like are:
- The Childhood Fren, because she actually cares about people and the planet, and also kicks ass in fights
- The materia hoarder who stole all your shit but had cutesy music and interesting dialogue on the airship
- The family dog (the ONLY part of the game that really got me emotional for longer than fifteen seconds).
- That fat guy who died really early on that cloud was a dick to on the train
The end.
I hate everyone else. The rest of the game is edgelord garbage and aeris being horny.
Characters I hate in FF6:
- Kefka, AKA the guy I'm supposed to hate, because the game is well written.
That is all.
Characters I really like in FF6:

And more I'm too lazy to find art for:
- Celes.
- Edgar.
- Mog.
- Locke.
- Relm.
Also FF6's music blows every song save three (which I think are of equal caliber) from FF7 out of the water. Just hearing the overworld music or the opening credit version of it gets me stirred up.
Anecdote time:
I sat down with a friend and watched him play the entirety of FF7. At the end he said "you know, I liked the game."
Then I asked "why? because the characters suddenly became likeable on disc 3? Did that really make up for Midgar? Or all the "what the fuck do I do now" moments? Or the controls?"
He couldn't answer.
Actually, the one thing he did say was that the game would have been better in 2D.
I'm happy he came around to liking Yuffie at the end, at least. Yuffie was the powerhouse on my playthrough, seconded by Cloud or Tifa.
Oh another thing, you don't have to play the entire game three times to understand the story without looking up someone else's explanation in FF6.
Of course, the gameplay is garbage in every FF game that isn't called FF5, though.
And one FF3 art that I adore, almost as much as the JP Phantasy Star II cover art:
