What if 90s was peak culture?
It was imo.
Yep.

Even if Japan becomes an economic powerhouse again like they were in the 80s, the anime industry is so fucked and bereft of talent or good ideas there will never be anything close to Iria ever again.
Yep.
I blame the rise of moeshit as much as anything else.
Manga still has some gems, though. Gintama (I've only read the manga) was fantastic despite not being a product of the 80's/90s.
This might be a more controversial one, but I also liked the more recent "Jitsu wa watashi wa" (2013-2017) manga a lot. Despite being harem manga. Had that same energy where things just accelerate into surreal craziness as Gintama and Dr. Slump had.
Still, I think that the last manga I really, really, really loved apart from Gintama (and the last non-comedy one) was Chobits (2000-2002).
Miyazaki movies have stayed pretty good, at least. But it's a bit of a shame Akiyuki Nosaka didn't get to do more Ghibli movies, too… Grave of the Fireflies hurt me a lot, but it was very moving and human.

I just miss the gratuitous giant anime booba
I miss the animation style of 90's giant anime booba.
Mostly unrelated, Miyazaki drives a cool car. And one that is very hard to find in the US.
