There are TV episodes and movies. The TV is reeeeeaally boring, the movies are just somewhat boring. None of the tactics are remotely realistic.
The TV version is the only show I can think of where my college anime club cut it off in mid-episode and switched to something else because of how boring it was. Char's Counterattack is much better than the LoGH movies.
Speaking as an employee of Federated Healthcare, Mr. Thompson was a competitor of ours. In fact; that's why we ordered a hit on him.

Free Speech, like free will, is a meme. QUOTE(Moonlight Rambler @ Dec 8 2024, 06:00) Also it's been nice seeing the overlal lack of sympathy towards this healthcare CEO guy who got killed in the US, at least in the circles i am often in.
He died doing what he loved; not getting healthcare in a timely fashion.

Go watch it. I think i'll try to hunt down a laserdisc and then watch it with subtitles overlaid by my amiga. Have a shitty foodservice job now so maybe i'll be able to buy some small things in the near future. Making double what i made last time i had a shitty foodservice job, which is still basically nothing but better than before. Thankfully, many laserdiscs are cheap. Looks like I can get a japanese one for under $30, maybe even from stateside. This post has been edited by Moonlight Rambler: Dec 9 2024, 22:23

QUOTE(Moonlight Rambler @ Dec 7 2024, 18:00) The old thread is locked, but i wanted to ask how urgent I should make it to watch The Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Or if I'd be better off reading it, or doing both.
And if I do both, should I read first and then watch? Or watch first and then read for more detail?
Its a slow burn, so you will probably need to stick which whatever one you go with. It takes about 10 eps to get into the characters. If the remake was further along and complete i'd recommend it. After watching the original series, the remake is a little uncanny valley as at the start its a 1:0.95 remake. The original series got pretty far but then ran out of steam, but also possibly for good reason at that point. QUOTE(Necromusume @ Dec 7 2024, 19:48) There are TV episodes and movies. Its a character driven drama. The combat is like medieval battles in space. Some elements like the politics, economics, leadership and macro strategy make sense and other elements make zero sense when you think about it. The character interactions are almost like death note with the drama. In college I think I only managed to screen three eps max, then if anyone was interested they could borrow the series. The 4k UHD of Akira exceeds the laserdisc now. Though, for you that might just mean finding a good rip online. Nyaa.si has a torrent. This post has been edited by EsotericSatire: Dec 9 2024, 23:54

my highest resolution screen is 1920x1200 and I happen to enjoy laserdiscs.

Sealed VHS tapes are starting to go up in value. For Akira, I had the VHS, DVD, Bluray and now 4k. I almost had the laser disc but relative sold it. Mostly used to watch the dub, but now watch the sub. The laserdisc version is great, just its no longer the best version like people have been ranting about.

This one of the few times I'll argue against subs.
Akira is a visually stunning movie,
A masterpiece.
They didn't phone in the English dubs either.
Both the 1989 and 2001 versions are very well done.

The interesting thing is a bunch of dubs of old anime are on youtube. Bpth dubs are on youtube. I think I used to watch the old dub on tv more, it has good emotion but the newer dub they sound more like their age I guess. Akira (1988) Pioneer 2001 English Dub Akira (1988) Streamline/Electric Media 1989 English dubThe older dub gives me the nostalgia. They are both pretty good actually. I can't decided which TETSUO!!!!! is better. This post has been edited by EsotericSatire: Dec 11 2024, 00:14

I'd love that, but Aus uses PAL, right? I don't think my VCR can do PAL (Panasonic PV-V4521). Maybe I should try to obtain one that can. My TV's can handle PAL. Although I could do the 'vhs-decode' method of capturing signals directly off the tape and decoding them in software. But that sort of defeats the point. And god damn, VCR prices are getting obscene. Wish my parents hadn't thrown out my three backups; it would have been good money. My GoVideo dual deck would have been amazing money. [ github.com] https://github.com/oyvindln/vhs-decode/I do have a 27 inch standard definition Toshiba CRT. This post has been edited by Moonlight Rambler: Dec 12 2024, 10:50

I have the old tv combo remote for it somewhere from when I had my original one. A friend is cleaning out his shed and there's 6 more top end vcrs that he's considering throwing out. I told him I'd take them so I'll see how that goes. QUOTE(Drone-chan @ Dec 12 2024, 14:56) ha, I wish. ours was pretty small.

Sony buying kadokawa is the final nail on the coffin. Good night Japan you went unpozzed for so long but this is probably where we part.

I tried watching Akira on YouTube the other day after you were all mentioning it but couldn't get through 10 minutes of it, plus it was the dub and I hate dubs. I might watch it someday but I'd have to be in the mood.
I ended up watching Song of the South (lol ADHD and autism) when I saw the thumbnail for it. The full movie. I didn't even know that movie was still in existence. It wasn't even racist! It was actually quite a sweet story. Disney is full of cunts.

Yeah, my great uncle (who is black, for what it's worth; my great grandmother refused to go to her daughter's wedding in the late 60's or early 70's because she was actually a racist fuckhead) gave me a copy of song of the south on VHS years ago; i still have it. It was a conversion of a UK PAL tape i think. They officially sold it in PAL regions for a long time, just not the US.
Its most "racist" element is just a result of the time period it's set in imo - reflecting some of the unfortunate realities of that time (early reconstruction, when most southern black people were still effectively slaves trapped by debt because they needed a roof over their heads). I've always thought it was ridiculous that disney never released it (on home video) here, because that's only really racist if your brain shuts down the moment you see black people on a plantation (which is more a historical reality tbh).
So yeah, the lingering shadow of slavery is definitely present in the movie. Actual racism, not so much, or at least how I (and my uncle I think) see it.
