The FMA animes are kinda weird. If we are talking about the first half, I still find the 2003 series to be somewhat superior. Definitely not the case if we are talking about the second half tho, or as a whole package, the 2003 version had a shitty ending.

You are not wrong. They spent more time on character development at the start of the 2003 series but I feel the newer series had better pacing overall. I did do that on a rewatch, watch the first half of 2003 then skip to brotherhood.

FMA always had a German-ish theme, and considering the year it's set in, it is understandable why the writers tried to tie it with the world wars materials.
