Entries no longer accepted. Will take me some time to go through all of these since some songs are too damn difficult to hear the chords. I should have put a rule that disqualifies the songs if I can't discern the chords in under 15 seconds.

Most of my later songs that didn't pass shared a similar quality (brief rising passage) so that's something I can learn to avoid. Most of my 4th round songs that did not pass were replacements with this feature that I initially rejected, so I should have stuck to my original selections. Can we have a Nutt5, or just post whatever we have left, for fun? I already have the links ready. No one cleared any rounds anyway, and judging from the recent grading, I may have a few in my Nutt5 that won't clear. You passed one of my songs that I later decided was surely wrong. Maybe it is a power of swimsuit. I thought my final song was a strong candidate to pass. Can you check the rest of that song, in particular this timestamp? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SWShKHlUEs&t=23I felt that most of this song was spamming the correct chords and I had different sections to choose from. This part (which is most of the song) is the clearest to hear. I then shifted my choice to the beginning (I usually try to go for the earliest possible valid spot) even though it is more busy, because I could (barely) hear the same exact background instrument chords there as well. Actually, the introduction was the exact same as the rest of the song with different melody chords superimposed on top.

QUOTE(BlueWaterSplash @ Dec 2 2021, 14:33) Nevermind, I figured out what is wrong with that girly song. It has that same ascension problem that most of my rejected submissions did (except that song is extra cheerful and spams those chords for the entire song, whereas the others only used it briefly). I don't know what that sequence is, maybe (I or II or III) V iii vi No point for an encore round then. I went back to check and most of my new weird songs probably have the same ascension problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqQwWQZtf1U&t=79 Easy onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Soe7tp3T_HI&t=8 Full set IV V iii vi ii V vi, or it should be VI VII v i iv VII i since it sounds like a minor key rather than major.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaPKWRWNFFw&t=0 Komuro? All major chords. The first song in my Butt0 is kind of weird and might pass, can you please check it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuwaBdtYI0M&t=233 All major chords. The one at 1:17 was the right one.Prizes all sent. I planned to spend 30-40M on this giveaway, in the end I spent 420k. This post has been edited by Ass Spanker: Dec 2 2021, 16:09

I guess I still have trouble telling the difference between minor and major chords. If that other Butt0 song passed, what about these two? I thought they were similar to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjkmTz2zDCE&t=570https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UStjJhVRvU&t=32I cannot tell if the key of a song is minor or major, or know what that even means exactly. I am guessing that most of the songs posted are major key. If it doesn't take too much time checking, can you list all the posted qualifying songs in this thread (by anyone, including yourself) that are in minor key? If the last chord moves way down (which I started to utilize only starting in Round 3) I think that is sort of like the minor version chord. However the song itself could still be major key, I think. And vice versa (Gundam song).

It's easy to explain what major/minor keys are on paper, though determining it in a qualitative method is difficult. Some people with good ears can hear a major/minor key, not me. I do it in the reverse way: listen for common chord progressions, determine the tonic (first note of a scale, usually very easily found at the very start/end of a song, or end of chorus, because it's the resolution), match the tonic with the progression to determine which key it is. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UStjJhVRvU&t=32. The progression is Db Eb Cm Fm. This means the song is likely in F minor or Ab major. Quickly scroll to the end of the song, you don't even have to check the chord, just listen to the vocals, "darling" is Ab, so the song is likely on Ab major. I think you are getting some concept wrong. The minor/major version of this chord progression is the same thing, it's the same major -> +2 semitones major -> -3 semitones minor -> +5 semitones minor progression, just having different numeral notations (IV V iii vi or VI VII v i) depending on whether the song is in a major or minor key.

The Christmas giveaway got closed. Guess I'll come back here a bit earlier than planned. QUOTE(Ass Spanker @ Master of Music) I don't listen to them much and I might be missing out on something nice by doing so. But to my experience, usually music for these groups are extremely formulaic because it's tried and true. Not to say anime music is not but idol music? It's sticking to the template to another level. Yes that was swing, I think at 1/5? It's a bit too fast for me to follow without checking in an app. Usually you will find swing at 1/3 in the case of common anime pop. Some examples I can think right off the top of my head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUIWP_KD7J4 is 1/4, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sY2YaoMYqk is 1/6. You will find 5 chord progressions extremely common in Japanese music. - Anime progression, a.k.a. Orange (I didn't use this name during the other giveaway...) 4 5 3m 6m. More popular starting late 2000s, early 2010s. - Canon progression: 1 5 6m 3m 4 1 4 5. Comes from Pachelbel's Canon. More popular during the 2000s. - Komuro progression: 6m 4 5 1. More popular during the earlier period (80s-90s). - Just the two of us progression: IVmajor7 III7 vi7 v7 I7. This chord progression has a somewhat emo feeling. - The most common progression in the world: 1 5 6m 4 (and its siblings). I can't hear the swing bass rhythm in any examples (including mine) on computer monitor speakers. I'll study this further later, but I need to get headphones or a new setup before trying to host such a contest of my own. Does popular contemporary Japanese music count as otaku culture if the artist never did any anime songs? I had actually found the name of the anime progression the day you started this. I had to look things up because I didn't know what a chord progression was. I saw what you didn't want people to see as well, but never used any of it except Orange and Railgun which I'd already selected. The Haruhi songs were also on my hard drive but the only one I like is Mirakuru-mika-run-run. I trained my ear on computer monitor speakers using the sevenths version, which I think is all inverted and screwed up, as it was the only plain isolated sample I could find. That might have slightly contributed to some of the wrong progressions I submitted. But I was right on many I doubted, so it was all for the sake of learning. And I rejected songs that were correct, haha. I'll still study a bit more of this stuff from time to time. I realized just today that 3 is mathematically closer to 4 in pitch (semitone) compared to 5 and 6. Like you wrote just earlier. Music theory is not intuitive, no wonder I'm so messed up. Can you check the following for the correct chords? I noticed these failed songs might pass with a different timestamp, just like the Hunter song earlier. Skuld's Revenge! I was surprised to find this. It's in the part where full songs usually rest. Bass seems right, but are those chords or just notes? There are high tinky chords, but they are different? Miku's Revenge! This is also in the resting passage and is the original spot I had identified, but I couldn't tell the difference between this and the wrong spots. Usagi Backwards This song doesn't rest but this is the equivalent spot where something briefly weird happens. Is it close? Usagi's Last Hope Hiding inside middle of chorus. Usagi Try Again Discovered this on my hard drive. Forgot it since I only watched American Sailor Moon. Bass notes seem right, tinky chords are upside down? Ranma Bouncy It seems to komuro then immediately go anime twice. Checked again, I think it's just komuro. Rinne Returns Both of these passages occur repeatedly. One seems higher than the other, does it mean one has to be wrong? This post has been edited by BlueWaterSplash: Jan 3 2022, 08:40

One seems higher than the other, does it mean one has to be wrong? Should I just renovate this thread into my music academy lol Pardons my green text format, it's just easier than copying quote chunks over and over. > Does popular contemporary Japanese music count as otaku culture if the artist never did any anime songs? Yes. That would be normal Jpop. > I trained my ear on computer monitor speakers using the sevenths version, which I think is all inverted and screwed up, as it was the only plain isolated sample I could find. That might have slightly contributed to some of the wrong progressions I submitted. The weird thing with chords is that extended chords (sixth, seventh, add random ass notes, inversions) can be multiple chords at the same time. At which point, naming the chords kind becomes meaningless. What you want to listen for is usually the feel in that case. For example, about the variant with the 3rd chord being a chromatic passing chord (IV V #VIdim vi), in this song (minor key, but I will use major notations for ease of reference), it would be Cmaj7 D6 B7/D# Em7. Now if it were to be strictly IV V #VIdim vi, it would be C D D#dim Em. Then why is the third chord B7? Because B7/D# is technically D#dimb6 chord (diminished flat sixth), but no sane human writes it like this, so it would technically become a B7 chord but inverted. So my point is that once the chords become too complicated and no longer resembles the progression of their most basic forms, matching the chords to their names wouldn't make a lot of sense. > 3 is mathematically closer to 4 in pitch (semitone) compared to 5 and 6 In major scales, not in minor. It's the other way in minor scales.

Beginning some fusion attempts, but it appears this won't work as well as hoped. Songs aren't similar enough overall. No total plagiarisms. QUOTE(Ass Spanker) Same canon progression with each chord lasting 1 bar, same key G major, the synths, both are fairly fast (technically the monmusu song is only 175BPM but the double time drumming makes it sound much faster). [ files.catbox.moe] https://files.catbox.moe/t5f7z7.mp3On my computer monitor speakers this sounded perfect but on my real speakers I can tell some chords don't match, so it might not be a perfect fusion. Still sounds great together, though. The rest of Monster Musume and Freedom Dive probably don't match. I still feel Monster Musume might have been inspired by Freedom Dive, because Monster's verse section has instrumentals that go all around and vaguely do what Freedom Dive does in what might be called its own verse (best part of Freedom Dive, to me). But the melody and chords don't resemble each other. At best, the lengths of sections could be the same. (I could try to fuse Goddess with Ranma since they both have that swing rhythm, but I think that's unlikely to work, as the songs don't sound that similar to me). I won't try to fuse Hesitation Snow and Inuyasha for a really long time because I need to get them in lossless first (I own Inuyasha CD, but only made mp3 for myself). There's one other candidate for possible fusion here: When I first posted them I noticed that Metal Fighter Miku and Sailor Star Song (don't think it has anime progression anywhere now, oh well) sounded quite similar with the singing style and song structure. I time shifted Miku to align the start of the first verse then pasted them blindly on top of each other and they have the exact same 142 BPM (although over the course of a full song it probably has to be adjusted). The verse and chorus lengths, including subsections, are almost identical too (1 extra bar sneaks in somewhere, so it's not trivial to correctly paste the songs together). The melodies and chords probably don't match, though. Can you use your special technique and check what keys Miku and Sailor Moon are in?

A lot don't match, the entire second half is 王道進行 in the Monmusu song, but FD goes Canon all the way. Also in the first half, these chords don't exactly fit well together, but if you extract only the vocals then slap on FD music? They match up nice enough. QUOTE(BlueWaterSplash @ Jan 9 2022, 06:43) I still feel Monster Musume might have been inspired by Freedom Dive, because Monster's verse section has instrumentals that go all around and vaguely do what Freedom Dive does in what might be called its own verse (best part of Freedom Dive, to me).
Both use arpeggiators (that's what you call the fast melody that loops itself) yes. But it's just a technique. You notice them a lot easier when they are used on a weird (usually annoying) synth. Similar rhythms won't work. Even exact same rhythms can't be mixed together if the chords or melodies are too off. I swear I have heard the Metal Fighter Miku song in some medleys or mixes. Sounds like F# major (almost said B major because the song ends on a B chord) for the first song, C major for the 2nd song. Song structure will almost be the same with most songs (though the lengths are usually different). Tempos can be time stretched to match, but chords and melodies are usually the deal-breaker, or at least that's according to my experience when I merge stuff together. Though the most fucked up shit when you merge two songs (in my experience, again) is weird ass keys and syncopation. Forgot about this, pardon the > format and no links cus I'm lazy to quote. > Skuld's Revenge! I was surprised to find this. It's in the part where full songs usually rest. Bass seems right, but are those chords or just notes? There are high tinky chords, but they are different? Sounds like your textbook 王道進行. C# D# Cm Fm => G# major key. I almost shit myself when I check the last chord of the song and it was A and not G#. Apparently there was a +1 key change at 4:43. > Miku's Revenge! This is also in the resting passage and is the original spot I had identified, but I couldn't tell the difference between this and the wrong spots. They sound extremely similar to 王道進行. Now I myself am getting confused with this. Explanation below: It uses a different voicing for the first chord. Remember that the first chord in the anime progression is IV. Here, it's IV6 but voiced as ii7. Though ii-V-iii-vi might as well be another voicing of 王道進行 (laugh in ii-V-I cadence). Now the big difference is that I'm quite confident the 4th chord is VI and not vi. Don't even talk anime progression, this chord is not even in the scale. The 4rd chord is Eb major, and there's no Eb major chord in the F# major scale (hell, the minor relative of F# is Eb minor itself). I guess it's some fancy modulation at work here. Not entirely sure. > Usagi Backwards This song doesn't rest but this is the equivalent spot where something briefly weird happens. Is it close? > Usagi's Last Hope Hiding inside middle of chorus. Not sure what chords you are looking at. > Usagi Try Again Discovered this on my hard drive. Forgot it since I only watched American Sailor Moon. Bass notes seem right, tinky chords are upside down? Sounds like a basic 王道進行 in C major to me. > Ranma Bouncy It seems to komuro then immediately go anime twice. You were pretty on point except for some minor stuff. Komuro from 0:26 to 0:32 but without the last chord. Then pre-chorus is full 王道進行 mode but the voicing for the first chord is also ii7 instead if IV. > Rinne Returns Both of these passages occur repeatedly. One seems higher than the other, does it mean one has to be wrong? Sounds like 王道進行, starting from Bb, which is my other favorite way to play this progression (behind C major of course), since they are almost exclusive white keys. The 2nd progression sounds very different? This post has been edited by Ass Spanker: Jan 9 2022, 05:34

If the full songs could have been fused I was hoping to call it 最高速 Fall in Love (ASS DiVER↓ Mix) but they don't. So I only did a simple merge as a listening experiment to probe for spots that might work. At least the audio quality came out good. [ www.mediafire.com] Freedom Monster (catbox seems down at the moment) Yuck, but at least it sounds neat when the part that works together begins. The songs start working together slightly before then, too. Sounds like it might be possible to cut up the other parts of Monster Musume into tiny passages, reorder, and force them to fit the introduction and main melody of Freedom Dive, but I don't know if there is any point to doing that. It would be better if we can find some other anime song that is naturally similar to the main melody of Freedom Dive. Since that part of Freedom Dive uses the anime chords there could exist some other anime or visual novel song out there that would sync up. QUOTE(Ass Spanker) I swear I have heard the Metal Fighter Miku song in some medleys or mixes. Sounds like F# major (almost said B major because the song ends on a B chord) for the first song, C major for the 2nd song.
It uses a different voicing for the first chord. Here, it's IV6 but voiced as ii7. Now the big difference is that I'm quite confident the 4th chord is VI and not vi. Don't even talk anime progression, this chord is not even in the scale. Few people in America know of what was apparently JC Staff's first TV anime. I searched JC Staff medleys and they didn't even know to put this show in it. Was worried I wouldn't find any youtube links; fortunately this show is more known in Japan (it was even parodied in Magical Pokan) and also some mma people had uploads. Upon checking, the passage I had linked feels like it might have a temporary key change corresponding to the fancy electric guitar melody there. Is the last chord in the similar spots a VI or vi? I also noticed that this part of the song, also in the resting passage, might have the sevenths version of the correct anime chord progression. Can you please check it? This is also a regular part of the song, but those parts have added bass and chords which might cause it to start on ii. Another possibility is that this whole song could be unkeyed. I have always had a bizarre feeling when I listen to it. There's a [ files.khinsider.com] midi of it; I wanted to check melody notes to confirm the key but my midi software is not installed to any of my current PCs. [ www.mediafire.com] Sailor MikuDoesn't sound good as the two song keys are clearly mismatched. So I tried changing the key of Metal Fighter Miku assuming it is either B or F# key (I also increased Miku by about 0.2 BPM). [ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku B[ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku F#[ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku F#dThough still weird, all of these sound much better, so I can't tell if Miku is in B key, F# key, or nothing key. Which one sounds best to you? It's too bad that F# is the worst possible key mismatch with Sailor Star's C major key: the Miku singer either becomes a chipmunk or a cow. Both songs have almost identical structure but throw in 1 bar here and there. I kept the entire song because the 1 bar eventually fixes itself: the first verse syncs then later the second chorus syncs. After I decide what key to go with, I might sync the entire songs.

The first few dozen seconds are outright dissonant and the rhythm doesn't match either. Usually you don't slow down the music but speed up the vocals instead. There's a point actually. It serves as a practice if you want to make more short and dumb mixes in the future for fun (like I do now). Though, FD is a really difficult song to mix anime pop into because the song is too damn fast, but the chords are slow. Also that's a VI yes. I should have looked for the midi from the start instead of checking on my pokey pokey instrument. I'm extra confident it's F# major when I check the midi. Miku's in F#. You usually wouldn't need to worry much about structure since you can cut or duplicate parts to match structure. What you want to match is really the chords, since there are shitloads of notes in one chord, and if a single one of them doesn't want to play with the others, it will sound bad. Also I would recommend isolating just the vocals and slapping onto another song instead of letting both melodies run in parallel since any imperfection will stand out a lot. [ files.catbox.moe] I always pick chords as the basis when I mix. 1:43 sounds really off because the synth is on F# while the chord is E, creating a half step interval. Should have pitch shifted that. [ files.catbox.moe] One of the rare ones where I picked rhythm and melody as the basis.[ files.catbox.moe] Example where I cut and paste a bit to match the structure since the original songs have somewhat different structures. Speaking of the songs I used in this mix, a song from an anime this season sounds uncannily similar to both. Rhythmically speaking, I like the new song a lot better. Maybe it's just faster and I'm a speed monster. Both songs used in this mix as well as the isekai song are from the same composer. This guy pretty much uses the same few templates for all his songs. If you haven't noticed it already, all these songs spam the anime progression like there's no tomorrow. Also, if the key difference is too large, you can play evil on both by increasing one by a few semitones and decreasing the other by a few so that you end up with half chipmunk half cow mixture instead of normal + full chipmunk or normal + full cow. I synced up Metal Fighter Miku and Sailor Star Song. Not perfectly, but the songs don't have matching chords nor matching melody, and are maximally different keys, so I think this level of effort is enough. [ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku B major [ files.catbox.moe] Who Needs to Match KeysWould you believe I actually think this sounds decent, haha. I looked up stuff and F# major is almost all black keys, so no wonder Sailor Miku sounds awful mixed straight. But key shifting by one semitone brings them into almost the same scale except for one note, which helps. This highlights the similarity of the two singers' voices and style. Sailor Miku C# major was not as good. [ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku F# minor [ files.catbox.moe] Less Cow This WayI tried a lot of different key shifts and this one also sounds among the best, pretending Miku is in F# minor. [ www.mediafire.com] Sailor Miku F# major [ files.catbox.moe] Sailor Star Song (Outer Space Mix)I took the opposite of your advice in this case since the melodies don't match anyway. I used Miku karaoke version to get rid of chipmunk. This is the best sounding one. Because the two songs have almost the exact same drums, style, and natural speed/BPM their fusion isn't overly busy and sounds clean, like one song. Could call this Sailor Star Song (Outer Space Mix). QUOTE(Ass Spanker @ D4DJ) There's a key change into F# minor/A major during the guitar solo. Probably F# minor. I'm extra confident it's F# major when I check the midi. This explains the resting passage then. But if the other parts of Miku also use VI that means the whole song could be going out of key. [ en.wikipedia.org] Wikipedia calls a controlled amount of this [ en.wikipedia.org] chromaticism. I only get the weird feeling with the original song. The midi sounds like standard F# major but a few notes are plain different; they don't sound like mistakes but rather as if they were forced to be different, perhaps because the original song's melody or chords occasionally go out of key? There is also a [ www.mediafire.com] BGM version of the Metal Fighter Miku chorus, re-arranged by Kenji Kawai (who seems to avoid the standard anime chord progression like the plague, although I noticed he often uses the ii V iii vi "rising" version). I likewise don't get any weird feeling from this, and expect it to be pure F# major.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGrRh-6JQ3QI happened to get a fetish and was listening to this song a lot lately. It never reminded me of anything, but after playing it thirty times I realized it might be vaguely compatible for fusion. This song is 68.7 BPM (I had guessed 70 BPM without using any tools or even watching my player's clock, not bad. I guess my power to unconsciously notice that Sailor Star and Metal Miku had the exact same BPM was not a fluke). I had also read stuffs during my prior post, so I thought it time to figure out a key myself. Using Ass Spanker method, I listened to the last melody note(s) at the end and chorus. I don't have any tuned instrument to check the note, but since I suspect I might have the (undeveloped beginnings of) perfect pitch ability, I tried wildly guessing at that note. I guessed F#. Then I looked up youtube videos of test tones and thought it was G or G# instead. Unless the note is the exact same instrument and octave, it's easy to get tricked (this is one way some of the online perfect pitch tests tried to throw off my guesses). Eventually I decided it was F# again, probably major key since this song sounds happy (at present, I have to wildly guess at this since I don't go checking chords). That particular youtube reference tone is nice because it slowly plays multiple instruments and octaves to help you, rather than a brief note at weird octave to throw you off. Ass Spanker no clickie or hover over [ www.mediafire.com] these [ www.mediafire.com] links. No read file names. You must first guess what the other fused song is. Wahaha! It's not perfect, but it worked out better than I expected. Unfortunately, this song has no karaoke version so I don't think there is a good way to isolate the vocals. The second link has an added resync.

The second link has an added resync. This is a very weird combo to mix together since Akanezora is in 3/4 or 6/8 (probably 6/8) but FD is 4/4 so the rhythms will conflict. Also FD changes keys a lot so you need to change the other song accordingly as well. Looks like F# major to me. In case you haven't noticed, this song spams the Canon progression. The last note trick is very useful for most songs (I would say around around 70%?). Obviously useless if the end doesn't resolve however. QUOTE(BlueWaterSplash @ Jan 27 2022, 08:22) probably major key since this song sounds happy
I never had much success with guessing major or minor based on how happy a song is. It's a scam invented by people with good musical ears. QUOTE(BlueWaterSplash @ Jan 27 2022, 08:22) This song is 68.7 BPM (I had guessed 70 BPM without using any tools or even watching my player's clock, not bad.
I can only roughly guess a song's tempo when it's around 300BPM or 150BPM lol. You can guess the reason why. Noni edit: let's use PM for this, shall we? This post has been edited by Noni: Jan 28 2022, 09:27
