Meanwhile, I find myself looking for random torque values, or spending long periods of time trying to find a write-up of something for the one critical step I didn't grok.

Uncharismatic, rambly youtubers are the fucking bane of the shade tree mechanic now. I refuse to watch some fool babble in a poorly edited 45 minute video to find the key info I need.

Slightly exagerated, but point still stands.

Meanwhile, some brake parts were delayed, should be able to fix the car tomorrow.

I think the online time i was looking up torque values was during the engine rebuild, I was super paranoid about everything then.

Having done this myself (the rambling), I still totally agree. I don't watch youtube videos for help in general pretty much ever.

I have noticed this on youtube. I remember one video where everyone in the comment section was pissed off as they skipped over the step that everyone was unsure about.

After delays getting parts, and rain, think I'm finally gonna rebrake the bimmer this afternoon.

Truck is getting new headlights/front turn signals/bezels, a fender, and a mirror. I had a minor fender bender a couple years ago that crinkled the panel and cracked the headlight and turn signal. Clipped a sign swerving to avoid some fool over the double yellow, so now I'm down a passenger mirror, and the turn signal just dissolved from the shock. It pulled the lower rivnuts out of the door, but should be able to get the holes flat enough to put the bracket there and stick a backer plate inside the door.
Fender is too crinkled to just pop a lanp assembly in methinks, so I got a new primed one, and little rattle can each of match paint and clear. Not great, but good enough.
They didn't stop, and I don't have full coverage. Fender was my fault after spinning out, exchanged info and report, etc; but the mirror is BS.

Give me energy, I have to get the motivation to replace part of my fender. Have had the new one in a box for two years now.

Old one just looks a bit shit but still works lol.

I wish I had energy. I got the front brakes done, but ran out of daylight and give a fuck. I'll take a crack at the rears today.
Because germany, I have to pull the driver side cabin air filter and housing to acess my brake fluid.

Bimmer brakes are done. There was more lining loose inside the rotor/drum than on the ebrake shoes themselves. Rears weren't on metal, but it obviously had cheap rotors that had been on metal before. Exchanged more brake fluid while I was at it.
It still could use hood pons instead of a strap though. I'd rather OEM type hardware, but can't source enough parts for that. Not buying a hood and radiator suport just to get damned brackets/latches and screws.

Jebus, what is going on with 2nd hand inflation.

My car is six years old and the depreciation is reversing. Its value has like doubled since 2019 wtf. Price had fallen down to 23k now they are selling for 43k+.

Is this just temporary?

I think it's the "shortage" of chips

As new cars can no longer be produced, the attention falls on the second-hand market, or that is supposed to be what happens.

It may be that in the future it will return to where it was before, although it is difficult to predict something

My guess is people are going back to work and need cars that they might have done without for the duration of covid.
Just a guess. IDK.

Yeah its crazy.

Friend had a 20 year old car, previously valued at 1 to 2k. Sold at 6k in less than 24 hours. They had 100 inquiries.

I think people are just struggling to find the cheap good cars atm. I used to assume I'd always be able to buy a decent ancient car for 2k if necessary but not at the moment.

It's been a thing for a while here that shitbox domestic beater cars are highly inflated in price. Their only real perk is being cheap (which the bubble pricing negates) and being as easy to work on as a fwd econobox ever will be. It's not that bad here; $500 car going for $2000-2500 is still asinine though.

Cooling fan exploded in my bimmer yesterday. Like literally.
Attached Image
Attached Image

It put those dents in the hood, put a hole in the hood insukation and embedded shrapnel in it, demolished the fan shroud, punched a hole + crack into the collant resivoir, sliced the upper radiator hose, sliced a PCV line clean in half, and killed a headlight ballast (the blast of hot coolant did that).

I think a cooling system overhaul is in order, as all the parts bascially domino in there, and who knows how old the water pump and thermostat are.
Parts to install: water pump, pulley, fan clutch, fan blades, fan shroud, coolant resivoir, thermostat and housing, upper radiator hose, PCV lines, low beam HID bulbs and drivers. The radiator, other (expensive) hoses, and electric fan are just fine.

I did get the new fender, mirror, lamps, and bezels on the truck. Pulled the door card and gave the skin a solid shove from the inside and it popped back into shape. I had to stick nuts inside the door for the bottom bracket on the mirror, and tightening those down actually put the door entirely back into shape.

Have you considered not driving a BMW?

I jest of course.

All cars are pieces of shit.

Fuel pump went in my hilux Yesterday.

That wouldn't bother me normally except it's in the fucking fuel tank.

It still runs on lpg, but the gas system on it is ancient and it stalls in traffic.

I had to drop the tank on my ranger to replace the filler neck and hose.

I wish you luck, I don't know if stuff rusts down under like it does here.

It depends on how close you are to the coast.

It's nowhere near the levels of corrosion I see in places that use salt on their roads.

They do that where I live and it's hell.
I'd rather they didn't and people learned to drive properly.

If you could figure out a way to ensure that, you'd make enough money to have Bill Gates chained to a post in your front yard with "porch autist" tattooed on his forehead.

Eddy:

Maybe if you hit him across the face enough times with a belt he might come up with a not shitty operating system.

We spend so much time trying to idiot-proof cars, I think we should let the idiots figure it out.

I also think that if jobs were a little lenient with clock-in time in high traffic areas, that might help reduce road rage somewhat.

And the way i see it, while there would be collateral damage (chance of idiots hitting me), once the idiot is out a car hopefully they'll learn something from that experience, or use a goddamn bike.

Funny thing, Microsoft used to sell a Unix variant called Xenix.

So they had a half-decent OS for the time. Then they abandoned it.

OS/2 was also relatively okay (compared to the other non-Xenix MS operating systems of the period).
