The issue is not proficiency which is easy as heck to level, its that your phase suit gives a massive bonus to one and only one spell type out of the 6.
That phase suit is the most expensive investment in the game, and gives massive enough bonus to damage so that there is no reason to ever use anything other then your selected element.
So the question is then, which element you select for your one and only element. The elephant in the room is that monsters on average have high elemental resistance and low holy/dark resistance. So the only valid choices are holy and dark.
The issue is not with proficiency (gossamer) it is with EDB (phase). Of course, your suggestions COULD be applied to both EDB and proficiency.
