Why do cats like to get under your feet?

Today, I opened the front door and a neighborhood cat was sniffing around the porch. We sort of startled each other but before it could run away, I said hello to it and talked nicely to it and it meowed at me and hung around.

To my surprise it rubbed its body on my leg and I turned to shut the front door. Something like this except I don't wear ghastly clothes or sandals with socks like that, ew:

As I pivoted back around eager to make a new friend, I accidentally stepped on it! Poor little thing. It felt like its paw but it could've been its tail. It screeched and took off and I looked around for it apologizing repeatedly. Finally I saw it over by the side gate and it disappeared under a shallow hole that had been dug under it. I had a feeling a cat dug that hole as a thoroughfare and I was right. Anyway, I was apologizing through the gate. I hope it forgives me and knows it was an accident. Are you serious? What is wrong with shorts? What is wrong with socks and sandals? Do you never wear socks or do you just wear your socks outside without shoes?
