Lots of states do that if they offer the return. It isn't a bad idea at all, and makes sense. I don't know why more don't bother with it.

I guess beings that most of my experiences come from Florida or foreign countries, it simply never occurred to me that this was an idea in practice. It's common sense used on something people normally pay no attention to.

QUOTE(cptkleenex @ Jun 24 2011, 15:44) Well, I've confirmed (at least in my humble opinion) that there really is a way to intelligently tax people.
In this state, when you buy drinks in certain containers, there will be an extra tax added labeled "MA Deposit". Want that money back? Bring the empty container back for recycling and it's all yours. Too lazy to bypass your trash can? Enjoy the extra tax.
So the state saves resources by encouraging recycling and brings in revenue from people too lazy to do it. To me, this is honestly a brilliant idea and I'd encourage every state to get on board.
It's weird reading something like this.

I've lived in Maine and long since I was born we've had the redemption sales tax. It's weird to see somebody speak of it like it's new and innovated.

Again, remember where I come from man. I'm from a state that gave BP oil drilling permits without changing the regulations, despite their... well... history. I'm from an area that seriously considers global climate change as a liberal conspiracy. Sure, I should have known someone out there was doing something intelligent about this, but it just simply didn't come into my wheelhouse until now. Small though it may be, it's seriously like I started life over again and have to try learning about the world around me, one tiny bit of culture or law at a time.

I'm glad to hear it isn't just tourists who are confused by the American tax system. People pick up helpful hints like "a decent tip in a restaurant is twice the tax", then go somewhere else where the tax is half as much, apply the same formula, and wonder why the waiter is giving them a dirty look. And speaking of tipping...

Most people neglect to understand that each state works very much like it's own country. They have their own differing laws, taxes and so forth. The only thing we're really united under is Federal laws and regulations.

I've never heard this. I've always tipped 10-20% of the bill, depending on the restaurant and service. Personally, I'm a fan of the gratuity included in the bill system employed by some countries. No need to dick around with this calculating a tip bullshit.

I always tip good. Especially if I go to a certain place a lot and enjoy the food. Hell, I've been known to give $5 tips for $10 meals.

I'd agree and disagree with that statement. I wouldn't go so far to say that each state is much like it's own country but moreso that each region of the country is different. There really isn't much difference culturally or legally in the south just as I'd think the same can be said of these New England states and likely even the west coast. There will be minor differences between states in the same region but no real shock until you leave a region.
