Both methods are done by stretching both cheeks to the sides. When waxing, try to do one side at a time, you won't get a clean rip when you try to put it directly on the hole.
If you have problems with chemicals, don't use them. This means do it with water and A LOT of after-shave so you won't get pus all over that area or use a cream/shaving foam that doesn't contain those chemicals.
