Yes, the perception of him as gay might have informed how she wrote the character, but when no one reads him as gay (people speculated he might have been, but that was based on him being unmarried and without any love interests which can be explained numerous other ways), you can't claim he is gay.

That last book was basically pandering to the shippers, anyway. Fortunately, I didn't invest that much time or effort in reading it. I speed read my way through HP, so I don't actually remember details from most of the books, nor did I waste that much of my life.
