True story. I've always stuck to the Water starter, except in Ruby / Sapphire where I went with Fire. And Yellow, where you have to start with Pikachu.
Might go with Grass in Black and White. Pig and Otter don't look that cool.
It's funny you should say that, because Swampert is a beast in competitive battle. He is so overused no team dares not have a viable Swampert counter. He is also frequently used as a lead.

Ah, the good old days when Psychic was a powerful type. I remember catching a Caterpie and spending an hour or so grinding till I could evolve it into a Butterfree and then leveling that Butterfree to 12 so it could learn Confusion. Wouldn't tackle Brock without it.
Eh, I find Rock Pokemon to be sorta meh for the most part.
Rock Pokemon do gain that x1.5 sp. defense boost in sandstorm during the fourth generation. However, they still aren't that great; although Ttar is still a fucking beast, and is ability to whip a sandstorm automatically upon release means is sp. def shoots up immediately.
I usually caught a Mankey and used it against Brock; though my starter would be evolved at that point so I could even take out his Pokemon with Charmelon.
