My general advice is to try to pick things that will look good in ten+ years. There are a lot of color and pattern selections that are in vogue today that become grating quite fast. I had two gay friends that divorced over a feature wall (and other issues but they both stated that as the straw that broke the camel's back).

At the moment its trendy to go with a split tone feature wall, you can have the darker tone on the bottom half and the lighter tone above. You can also split it with a feature pattern. That way you can go with safer color selections and use the pattern you want without overboard and be fancy but with less risk.

If you have an idea of the furniture it is easier to finalize your selections but don't select something that only goes with your current furniture.

My main selection criteria these days is something that's not going to give me a migraine in future. People thought I got someone else to decorate my current place because it apparently lacks my usual 'absurd' color selections.
