Solar power has always been just around the corner. "Our Mr. Sun," a Bell Labs science filmstrip for schools from the 50's, was excited about solar power, too. Probably in part because Bell Labs developed the first "practical" photovoltaic cell in the mid 50's. Even if it was ungodly expensive.
Maybe. The problem with Solar and wind is the panels and turbines are not lasting anywhere near as long as they are supposed to currently. Solar panels are lasting half as long as they need to in order to recoup costs and wind turbines are lasting a 1/4 to a 1/3 as long as they are supposed to. Both are generating massive costs and rubbish.
Even when working optimally the issue is also storage of the energy. Solar tends to generate energy at off peak times and wind is inconsistent.
Geothermal seems to work pretty well but only works in certain locations.
Nuclear works pretty well as long as responsible modern designs with proper maintenance are used.
Battery storage has major issues as well, the gigantic expense and the fact that they are consumable items which adds massive expense. Currently we have enough battery capacity to power the world for 1 minute. We are already using slaves and fighting over lithium.
The super heated brick system and the kinetic flywheel energy storage systems might have potential as energy storage for industry. Scale, maintenance and efficiency are the issues.
edit: The tesla solar roofs also pointed out issues with house design for solar, that efficiency drops unless you are able to clean your roof once or twice a year.
