Putting chlorine into stagnant water containers is standard practice to prevent bacterial growth.

Quantity has its own quality. And they are getting better all the time. A lot of copied gears and items are also "good enough". The correct amount of chlorine in the water will keep it potable. If you are worried you can use charcoal filters. Even boiling it or sticking it in the fridge for a few days in an open container will help evaporate a decent amount off.

You could take a cup of warm water and pee into it a bit, to see if it reacts to make that public swimming pool smell. That would indicate a high level of chlorine. It would work just hilarious lol.
