Free Speech would have been shut down about the multiple West Point cheating scandals citing racism except that West Point has a strict ethics code for all the military leaders it is expected to create. Ethics codes require cheaters to wash out, but black leaders say that is unfair. 73 cadets were accused of cooperative pre-planned cheating after West Point instructors discovered “irregularities in the mathematical work” they submitted on a final calculus exam in May. A substantial number of cheaters were found to be black.
The controversy lies in the cheaters being allowed into a "rehabilitation program" in order to continue their education into being future leaders of the USA military of which many also enter into government civil service after retiring from the military program. Instead of washing out, as the ethics code requires, the cheaters are allowed to continue.
Black alumni leader retired Captain Ms. Tobin, who is a founder of the West Point Black alumni organization, Do More Together, said one of the most important traditions of West Point was the honor code, which graduates try to live by during military service and throughout their lives. It is a West Point requirement that academy students MUST follow the honor code and not merely try to follow it. This has been cited by multiple leaders in the black community as unreasonable.
As stated in the news interview, “The chance that we may be tolerating those who don’t choose the harder right over the easier wrong is not only scary, but it chips away at who we are, so we’re wrestling with it,” said retired Captain Ms Tobin who is also the vice president of West Point Women social group. But she has come to believe that asking young black people to operate in a “zero defect environment” is unrealistic, she said, and that maybe people can become better leaders by understanding failure.
Interesting. I got a yodaish vibe from the comment tho.
I used to work at a pizza joint. Basically one day I was really fuckin' hungry, and the only pizza we'd fucked up had pineapple on it. So I ate it and discovered it wasn't that bad. Get over your elitism.
