I think the neck is the part i messed up the most tbh. Head's a bit big too relative to torso.

Updated profile pic, had to redraw some of that for 100x100 and also crop. I'd been thinking about changing it for a week or so. Thanks for the push.

in a different draft I went the opposite direction though. I don't think I like this as much but I also didn't polish it as much.

Free-handing for larger stuff, but then I usually go back and do pixel pushing to clean things up a bit.
My old profile pic (which I still like) was almost entirely "pixel-pushed." That's easier at low resolutions.

That's actually a cropped version of the full thing, but I like it most.
And the depth issue is partially due to Amiga limitations (32 colors, plus the same colors at half intensities) and partially due to my desires to give things the aesthetics of even more limited systems.
I am drawing these on a computer from around 1987, expanded to 2MB of RAM.
The current profile would be renderable on a NES/Famicom if the background were also black. It's also a very early draft that I just got pushed into sharing early.
The criticism is valid though and i am thankful for the suggestions.

I agree, although I think both of these two are cute in their own ways.
And I can hardly refer to myself as a democrat since they're afraid to touch the word 'socialism' with a 50-foot pole.

BTW, that last picture was actually originally drawn in pencil in a notebook and then scanned, traced on a digitizer with a stylus, downscaled, and finally traced over again in individual pixels to correct for the downscaling. Of course, I used gimp for this one because it has layers unlike Deluxe Paint.

Wrought with little problems of course but I drew it on graphing paper so whatever.

Lol, looking back at this I think I elongated the neck at some point while tracing the pixel art.

I figured the graph paper would be 1:1 square to pixel. While it can be used to freehand like that and is a godsend when it comes to perspective, foreshortening, composition, and proportion, if you're truly doing "pixel art" and not "I only have MSPaint" art (I know it's an Amiga, I'm making a point) it would help to start thinking of the graph paper more like a pixel grid.

I actually like that one better. It's more aesthetically pleasing with the neotenous proportions. As far as my avatar, it's actually made in MSPaint. My sig with the caricature of my wife was done with Photoshop CS6 and I cheated using a Wacom pen tablet.
