Would of. One of those things I find hilariously wrong, but also one of those things I forgive, becausecus many people seem to do it. Plus, I know you're intelligent and you know the actual words are 'would have'.

Dude: well, that's how I feel about grammar. it's very important.

gram·mar
   [gram-er]
noun
1.
the study of the way the sentences of a language are constructed; morphology and syntax.
2.
these features or constructions themselves: English grammar.
3.
an account of these features; a set of rules accounting for these constructions: a grammar of English.
4.
Generative Grammar. a device, as a body of rules, whose output is all of the sentences that are permissible in a given language, while excluding all those that are not permissible.
5.
prescriptive grammar.

...Nope, I don't see anything about the correct spelling of Spanish words or names of companies there.

I wouldn't be certain. There are a lot of little left-over things like that from when people were still learning English. You hear certain turns of the phrase a lot as a kid, and nobody ever explains them or spells them out to you, so you grow up thinking one thing and never having reason to believe otherwise.

Example: up until this year, I thought the phrase "null and void" was correctly written "null in void." There was no logical reason to think this, but that's how it had always sounded to me because nobody fucking enunciates their words anymore. Lazy shitbags.

The funny thing to me is that "would of" is actually more work than "would've". You're right though, even intelligent people can completely overlook such small nuisances if they simply grew up and others around them used it in such a manner. Hell, growing up being told something and believing it because its such a common thought is the biggest reason religion persists in human societies, but that's a wholly different subject.

I hate how the majority of my professors say "I'm not worried about spelling or grammar in your work, this isn't an English class, I just want to know that you know the content of the class". Seems rational, sounds like a logical compromise, right? Well, problem is that kids go through classes constantly messing up grammar and misspelling plenty of words and over the years the teachers just overlook these things because "I'm not an English teacher", but writing is actually the most useful basic tool at your disposal. Shit like this should be enforced in classes, regardless of the subject matter being taught. On the positive side of things, I probably get perfect scores on papers because my writing is damn near impeccable, as I take the time to read what I wrote and edit my work when I'm done with it, and it probably looks amazing in comparison to someone writing the same ideas as I, but messing up simple points of grammar like 'your' and 'you're'.

But the usage of 'would've', though proper, is typically frowned upon.

Yeah. That's why I usually just write out 'would have' if I'm ever writing for a class. On the net I'll probably use 'would've' because it's shorter and if I'm writing from my phone it's certainly easier.

One thing I often mess up if I'm writing really quick (or drinking while writing) is the usage of "its" or "it's". Even sober I sometimes have to remind myself that "its" is a possessive pronoun while "it's" is a contraction which means "it is" or "it has". I get confused by this one because possessive nouns always add 's at the end to denote possession and this one pronoun works the opposite way.

One time, an acquaintance of mine who works for a company that grades standardized tests called in a favor. So I was grading elementary kids' essays eight hours a day for several weeks. Probably the most vile, deplorable, suicide-inducing thing I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing. True story.

QUOTE(TotalWhittle @ Mar 8 2012, 14:57) *

Thank you.

You're welcome

This reminds me of my sociology teacher because she misspelled a few things on our last test and I corrected them with a red marker while taking the test. I mean, seriously, how can you spell it 'congradulations'? I thought she was gonna be mad at me and dock me points because a student is correcting a teacher, but she actually left me a nice note thanking me. Then today as we were talking about the banking method of education and how it makes many teachers feel entitled to think that they have nothing to learn from students, she brought up my test incident and said that she has spelled that wrong for years and applauded my 'courage'. It's funny because in the grand scheme of things her misspelling that one word doesn't really matter, yet in the military I usually got in a lot of shit for correcting officers and that was on situations where it actually DID matter:
"uh, sir, if we keep going north we're gonna hit the border of Iran"
"I'm pretty sure we're going the right way, Montero, remember I'm the officer here"
"yeah, but sir, I'm the one with the map and the GPS..."
"Stop questioning authority Montero, its really starting to piss me off"
"Sir, I'm not questioning authority, I'm just trying to show you our-"
"SHUT THE FUCK UP OR YOU'RE STANDING MORE POST WHEN WE GET BACK!"
And we actually did cross into Iran, which I'm pretty sure was a huge political mistake... We could have started a war over the arrogance of a lieutenant to listen to a lowly lance corporal, but luckily there was no standing military at the crossing we took. Fortunately I told my squad leader, who takes shit from no one and doesn't afraid of anything, and he almost killed the lieutenant for his stupidity (protip: if you're a 2nd LT on your first deployment, listen to the squad leader who's on his fourth deployment and has more combat valor awards than you do in your entire stack of two lonely ribbons, or at least pay some attention to his radio operator (myself) who also has some experience compared to you, when he tells you something is wrong).

I feel like this when I see my youngest sister's essays, and she's in the 8th grade. Fortunately the older one took after me and reads so much that her writing skills are pretty good and she always gets As in her English classes. The youngest one though... Jesus, it's like trying to teach a rock how to swim.
