Agreed. Nobody deserves so many intrusive, dishonest smilies.
Honestly, I'm fine with smilies when they are used sparingly and actually mean something. People spam (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) and (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) and (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) and shit when they don't even mean it. You're not that happy, you're not laughing out loud. I seriously doubt anyone is insane enough to be crying while they write a post with two or three (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/cry.gif)s, and nobody who posts a (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) is cool. They're not cute or funny. Maybe when used sparingly, but a post with 3 or more of those things is just a terrible eyesore.
This is a written medium, people. If you can't express what you want to in words, then maybe you should stick to talking to people in real life or on the phone.
Edit: That goes for unfunny newspaper comics, too.

I'd imagine the person(s) who find that comic funny are the type of people who spend their weekend nights reading some old novel, drinking weak tea and listening to NPR, occasionally chuckling in their throat at the little quips most people wouldn't find funny.
