Well, every country has a prevalent anime. The US (and Canada), for instance has Dragon Ball Z: It's what all the kids used to watch. Mexico has Saint Seiya. The Philippines have Gundam. France I think has Hokuto no Ken. Ranma is Big in Russia.
Is there nothing in korea that even people who don't actively watch anime (i.e.: the layman) know enough about?
I have very little idea. My first experience with anime (disregarding Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon) was that one episode of Pokemon where Ash gets chased by a Mankey that evolves into a Primeape or something, and we get the backstory of his hat or some shit. And that was like, the day before I moved back to Korea from America. After that, I couldn't really bring myself to watch anime in Korean, because the dubbing was so godawful I gave up. I eschewed anime pretty much altogether during my time in Korea, and it's not like middle schoolers talk about anime all too often (I do remember some of my classmates had magazines, they might have been Newtype, not too sure).
I only really started getting into anime on my last year of high school or so. My first year of university and introduction to Eureka Seven marked the first time I skipped class to watch anime. It was a gateway skip and I ended up skipping classes often. I regret that. Skipping, that is, not watching Eureka Seven. I think I watched all 52 or so episodes in the span of a week. 'Twas fun.
And now, I'm back in Korea, but I have no friends and I hate reading Korean on the Internet anyhow. So the tastes of Koreans are something that are unfamiliar to me.
But if I had to venture a guess, I would say DBZ?
