They're fun.
But they're so fucking stupid, anymore.
ALPINE EDIT: Video games in general, including, but not limited to Pokemon.

They're not mutually inclusive. Fun does not equal interesting.
Galaga is fun. But is it interesting? Dragon Age is interesting. But is it fun?
Very few games I can think of off-hand are both. And very few created in the last decade.

Are you one of those snooty retro game dudes? One that claims that the NES was the pinnacle of all game creation and that everything since has been crap?

Good. I would have had to subtract a respect point from you. I know how important that is to you.

But developers are over-complicating every fucking game that comes out. And the more bogged down and mired in mechanics and bullshit they're getting, the less fun it is for me.
I honestly can't stand how games in my chosen genre are getting to 60-80+ hours. Too much filler makes my brain want to die.
The last game I played that I truly enjoyed, however, was Beautiful Katamari. Before that was possibly Shadow of the Colossus. Before that was Xenosaga Episode I. So it's much further between than it had been.

It's because of who they're selling to, I think. Some people just like to beat a game. Others like to beat the hell out of it. Even Shadow of the Collossus had the time attack modes and extra equipment you could find to enhance the experience. Honestly, I like when games offer customization, mini-games and side-quests, provided those quests aren't just more "Kill X rats" or "Deliver this pie to my cousin on the other side of the continent" bullshit. Seriously, does no one in RPGs have access to FedEx or some shit? But yeah, in my mind the ideal game would be one whose main storyline you can complete in less than 12 hours, but has enough bonus content that you can keep coming back for 40+ hours if you like. The bonus content, though, should all be purely optional. The core mechanics of the game need to be able to stand up on their own without all the bells and whistles.

I felt the same way about the latter Pokémon games, where all of a sudden, everything was about making candy and having boring fashion shows. Or beauty pageants. Whatever the fuck it was. I suppose you don't have to bother with that stuff, but still, it pissed me off that it was even included. And because of that, I haven't touched a Pokémon game since the Game Boy Advance. Talk about alienating. As for retro games and retro game nerds, I'm of the opinion that retro games can be good, but there was always the crowning turd in the proverbial punchbowl, just like nowadays. Very little has changed in that respect.

Lost Odyssey was alright, I guess. Blue Dragon was awful. Tales of Vesperia was disappointing.
I haven't played many RPGs this generation.
Because they all insist on bullshit filler.

I haven't played many RPG's this generation either, aside of the more western stuff like Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls and Fallout. I think it's partially due to the reasons that have been mentioned here but also just has to do with the fact I think I'm just not as interested in them as I once was. Granted, I did have a really good time with Demon's Souls this generation and I'm really looking forward to Dark Souls, but I just don't get very excited for RPG's like I used to.

I'd like to see a less annoying than it's predecessor, sequel of Toejam and Earl.
Maybe a Streets of Rage 4.
Or possibly a Sonic game that doesn't make me cry in anguish over how terrible something I loved from my childhood causes me so much causes me gastrointestinal discomfort every time I see a new game come out.

Tonight was a good night for some stand up comedy. Went back and enjoyed the late, great Mitch Hedberg, Greg Proops, Gilbert Gottfried and Steve Byrne. Good times.

As opposed to where, exactly? I'm pretty sure you could cum on roses and it still wouldn't smell too great.
