There is no single answer, PFUDOR is just the level of difficuty.
PFUDOR arenas, PFUDOR IW and PFUDOR Fest are three different things.

If you just want to do some arenas Pen5Arch4 is probably better, you're not going to cure too much with imperil elemental and an increase of nearly 3% of damage is not bad.
For IW and Fests Pen5Sp4 is a lot better since needing less cures and spirit potions/elixirs is much better than a bit more damage.

Probably something around:

Arenas: Pen5Arch4

IW:
< IWBTH: Pen5Arch4
IWBTH: About the same?
PFUDOR: Pen5Sp4

Fest:
<Nintendo: Pen5Arch4
Nintendo: About the same?
> Nintendo: Pen5Sp4

This thinking about a well forged set, the less forged you are and the lower level the better Spellweaver is.

Magic damage => less turns attacking
Cast speed => less turns curing (and less spirit damage)

So, with higher incoming damage (difficult modes or weak mage) spellweaver is better.
The real issue is that you can't really get the grasp of it unless you start playing.

Anyway, for starting I would recommend going the spellweaver way (it's not like you absolutely have to get Pen5Spe4, try to get the Pen5 part and consider spellweaver an added bonus), the first impression of maging is usually shocking since you're moving from impressive defenses to basically no armor.

Holy mage need spellweaver, in the time you cast Paradise Lost you can cast Imperil 3 times.
So to get the same result of Imperil 1-2-3 Imperil 4-5-6 Imperil 7-8-9 Elemental T3 (3.4 action time) a holy mage needs Paradise Lost Banishment Smite Paradise Lost (6.6 action time).
Well, not exactly the same result, but the idea is that the incoming damage is easily 1.5X more, so spellweaver is really important.

No doubt, no options: pen5+spell4 is the best, by far. What I do is I go 3 charged+ 2radiant through arenas, and 4charged+1radiant through PFfest. You could consider something similar. But don't go for arch.


Why? Because with my build already 3/2 or even 3/4 of the time per round is imperil phase. All curing is in imperil phase.

One of the issues I'm noting with fire mage is that Sapo84 has been so successful at getting people to look this way (manga522, sickentide, etc) that there is some competition for fire pieces these days.

How often does a good elemental staff of any kind appear in auction (much less a LFRD)?

Given the fact that most decent cloth equipment is of level 500, does it make sense to make any serious commitment to mage before level 450?

The only competion on fire pieces I see is atn, and you can still both buy decent radiant phases for <2M so I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing.
Also manga522 went the fire mage route because he has a Peerless fire staff, not because I said that fire mage is among the best elemental mage due to cheap clothes (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/heh.gif)

You can soulfuse level 500 clothes at level 400 so why not?
And it's not like you need to start with full radiant/charged set.

I have remembered that HentaiVerse has one screen with both items and equips but could not find it anywhere. Now I see that one of the patches removed that screen, less hustle for me then.

One question more, guys/ladies.

1) when I press C button and watch equip closely, I can hover over stat to see its ~base~ value. Is it true base value, or base value with forge and IW in account?
2) if latter is true (and I think it is), how can one find the real base value of stat? I assume there should be some weird, screwed formula and I dare/scare to see it...
3) supposed we have vanilla item - some average equip with no suffix and prefix. Now, what suffixes and prefixes can modify its base value? For example, average rapier has its own ADB, but average rapier of slaughter has higher ADB, however both average rapier and average rapier of banshee have same ADB (or do they?).

1. this way: https://ehwiki.org/wiki/Level_Scaling. it takes into account forge and iw, if present. if only iw is present, then math is quite simple and it basically affects only ADB and MDB. if forge is present as well, math is more complicated and still not fully discovered

2. as i said, more complicated math is involved. atm i guess that the most precise tool is my set of forge spreadsheets, which give very good results for the forge matrix, but still a little error in calculating the base roll. sadly i cannot improve them more than this without tenboro's hints. let's see if i'll have success...
and no, you don't want to see the math sheet. the database one should already be enough (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

3. yes, they do. check here: https://ehwiki.org/wiki/Equipment_Ranges
whatever prefix or suffix changes that stat - more than one stat is possible, like ACC/Crit for Balance and MACC/MC/BUR for Battlecaster. if the cell on the second column is empty, then nothing modifies the roll range (this includes PABs, since what's written is only the acronym). whatever other suffix/prefix (including no prefix/suffix at all) is treated as the vanilla stat

Eh, as I fear I have to check Equipment Comparison and Percentile Ranges scripts to find exact formulas. I have seen fornulas inside them, but main mechanics is still vague for me. I just can't intuitively got it, like I am 3-grade scholar and trying to understand Lobachevsky's Geometry.
It is okay to have an end result in form of database, but I still want to understand how and why numbers are as they are.

Well, will dig in scripts then.

If I have ~Flame Spike Shield~ in my ability screen, then ~fire mitigation~ of enemies would be decreased and enemies would take ~Searing Skin~ effect which reduces ~taken damage by 10%~ and further decrease ~cold mitigation~ too?

If I have electric rapier, what Spike Shield I should use then? Should I use ~Flame Spike Shield~ to decrease total damage from enemies, or ~Storm Spike Shield~ to decrease their mitigation for electric, which my rapier is

Or I am confusing something here? o_o

This is what I thought too. Between 10% less damage taking and 25% more damage giving, one should take the former.
In my case, however, I have no problems with clearing arenas in a matter of receiving damage, so maybe if I switch to ~Storm Spike Shield~ I will clear arenas a little faster? Just a random guessing...

at your level defense shouldn't be a problem, so i'd personally pick the damage boost. it's the same reason because you usually drop Protection/Warding armors for Slaughter ones.

but if you want a clear answer, just do a few arenas for a couple of days with both spikes and check yourself. in term of turns, not time.

Would it be possible to change every day to match the daily elemental magic bonus? In my experience the day that my spike shield is buffed seems slightly faster. Does this make sense?
