But then I got some credits and went maging. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I recall an older conversation involving you with someone about Holy versus Elemental mages, which was interesting at the time.

For someone 300-320ish, what kinds of mages are there, what kinds of equipment do they need, and
what costs are involved?

Is this a wiki article? If not it should be (How to Be a Mage 101).

thx.

wiki actively discourages going mage before a certain level. but try with advice and advice advanced.

as for the style, well... you may want either a holy/dark set to farm SG trophies at low difficulty or an elemental for every use.

personally i'd suggest you 5 phases (50~100k tier ones) and a matching staff (not needing a top-tier, ie if you want to go holy a hallowed katalox of destruction is good anyways) to get accostumed with styles. rolls aren't that important. you can skip even IW on armors, just do it on staff.

oh, and be sure to have imperil at the very least. if not, start farming prof. the higher, the better.

approaching 1k Hath. which of the following perks are useful?

Effluent Ether (mostly playing melee though)
Mentats
Tokenizer 1 (not playing GF though)

and i guess quite far behind:

Resplendent Regeneration
Force of Nature

and there's also the plan B: Thinking Cap + AL 200 -> 300 (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/duck.gif)

I think the "far behind" ones should be before the other 3 if you play melee (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/heh.gif)

As I explained you the RR is better than EE for melee, expecially for 1H, by quite a lot.
Tokenizer is quite useless as you can see by RoadShoe's rant about Tokens. Tokens drop shit-like. Deal with it (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Mentats may be nice, but do you really need that, doing 1 level every 15/20 days (roughly dawn bonuses only)? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

On the other hand it's not like RR is that good anyway. It's quite good, but not that good.
Same for Force of Nature, you'll get your supportive spells last 10% longer, so less clicks on spell per minute, so you get time saved and 10% MP pots less used...quite the same as EE, but a little better since it saves you time for recast (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Ok, go for this. It's a priority on Mentats and 4/5 of the other stuff for sure (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I`d go for Tokenizer. Monsters are profitable enough + noodly appendage quite often (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I didn't, but from actual experience, Token I is quite good, but as you said, you won't be doing grindfests.

I'm getting around 20 tokens in total by doing my daily 2200 GF rounds, so I'm even saving up for Token II now.

To tell the truth, I wouldn't go for any of these options if you just play a little everyday.

A better option would probably be to just keep the Hath for possible new perks in future patches, or sell it and save up to make a decent mage to speed through battle modes so you can play more in the same amount of time.

How to Be a Mage 101 is quite simple.

All mages can use imperil, and need to use it to clear battles faster in higher difficulties.

Dark and Holy mages can play without imperil, even on higher difficulties, but that will require a lot of forging.

For mage gear, the most important would be the staff, where you need it with a proper prefix and suffix, and it should have innate Counter Resist as well, so if you were to be an elec mage, you would go for a Legendary Shocking Willow Staff of Destruction(LSWD for short), or for a holy mage you would want a Legendary Hallowed Oak Staff of Heimdall(LHOH for short).

You can use a Redwood for elemental mages, and Katalox for Holy/Dark, but the lack of Counter Resist makes it just a second choice if you can't find anything better available at the time.

For the armor, you want either phase of your element or cotton of your proficiency, but this already enters into advanced grounds because of the discussion of proficiency factor and EDB loss.

All you need to remember is that full mages are glass cannons and need to be fully buffed to survive properly on high difficulty and long battle modes, so it's the most expensive playstyle to get started and to play with, but it's also the one with the fastest clearspeed.

I've done some, all of which still says Tokenizer I is a bad idea if you don't do GFs.
Thankfully my early data that suggested that the Blood:Chaos mon-drop ratio was 1:5 was just an error due to small sample size, but I can still say if you only play Arenas you will get less Blood Tokens.
I did the math to see what the ratio of Clear Bonus Tokens to Mon Drop Tokens would be needed to offset the change of Blood:Chaos ratio form 1:2 to 1:3 and it needed to be 1:1 at Tokenizer I (and 2:1 at Tokenizer 0), which clearly isn't true, what data little data I have on the Clear-Bonus:Mon-Drop ratio say it slightly less then half that.
CODE
Tokenizer 1
       Arena        Drops        Total
Chaos  407  75.09%  289  78.11%  696  76.32%
Blood  135  24.91%   81  21.89%  216  23.68%
Total  542          370          912

In a reloader environment, anything other than the bare essentials costs time. OFC and an arena runs slower, but uses fewer consumables by 1/3 to 1/2. It saves turns as opposed to saving time.

I have no idea how did you test it but it's plain wrong if you have everything setup correctly (I'll come back to this later).
OFC is so good that it's somewhat better to fire at 210-220 OC, lose spirit stance in the process and switch it back at ~100.

With that tech I managed to shave ~10 seconds to PF 97rounds IW runs.
Best recorded time was 8m25s, which I can assure you it's pretty fucking good for 1H
Attached Image
And 3.73 t/s is more or less the limit for arenas run (3.7-3.8 is the max range, better than that it's possible only on SGs) so there is hardly any t/s lost in the process.

The idea is that you should not lose time when casting OFC, it should be either a mouse click or a single keyboard press, you just move the mouse away for half a second, click, and go back to hovering.
No time wasted and you can clear a round in 0.5s.

@Scremaz: honestly all options sound kind of crappy, just get a mage perk and switch to mage already.

nah. i like melee's mindlessness. the same credits that a casual player like me would use waste on decent gears may be better used to help other people purchasing gold stars, for example.

actually native CR isn't mandatory. it's only very useful. but you may go even without that - it's just that you'll need a good prof in exchange, iirc. it was discussed a few days ago.
fire/cold mages would've been lost otherwise - but noni is clearly showing the opposite, and he's a cold mage (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I would recommend RR or force of nature instead over that one.

From an MP save standpoint, 1H melee:
RR >>>>>> Force of Nature > Effluent Ether

Tokenizer...just a waste of hath in my opinion (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

You know, the name of this thread is Ask the Experts, not Mock the Newbies.

I consider your comments mocking, and offensive. Keep it up and I will find out how to file formal complaints about it.

Hah, I feel as if were in a similar situation( except you have a gold star already so you are more invested.) At our level we are beginning to see 1h seems like garbage compared to mage. But the mountain we have to climb for mage gear is insanely steep. It's a tad bit frustrating how linear this game can be in regards to choosing armor/weapons/skills. Low lvl> 1h heavy> mage seems like the only route unless you want to be unique(gimped).
This community doesn't seem too toxic against us mid-levels compared to other gaming communities I've tried out. I think they expect us to look through all the information available first before jumping into ask experts. I'm sure they have seen the same questions over & over through the years. At least they aren't telling us to commit suicide like I've heard in other gaming communities. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Not really, I'm pretty sure I never saw users insulted/mocked in this sections because they haven't read all available information (note that this is not true at all in other sections were stupid posts are often mocked).
While it's a good idea to read the wiki/pinned threads before asking any questions I don't think anyone here is against users asking questions that are already answered somewhere, as long as they don't do it constantly.
