btw, just wondering: apart for SG vs. non-SG and personal tastes, what's the main discerning factor between the many mage styles atm?

What Slobber said. As I understand it, the type of wood determines things like counter resist and stuff. That makes some difference beetween elementals. Then Holy does more damage and costs more mana. And Dark costs more mana (and does a little bit more damage than elemental).

Except fire. Fire sucks. Nobody knows why, but everybody seems to agree. Who am I to disagree?

fire has the least support. argh there was that discussion on elements a long while back and it gets linked sometimes. that discussion is still relevant.

edit: think it was this one https://forums.e-hentai.org/index.php?showt...&hl=element

A long time ago, Dragonkin used to be really popular. If they still are, then that's also a reason Fire sucks.

Edit: Maybe not so much, I thought their fire res was higher than 25...

i guess that when you have enough Evade, it's not like you have to fear them so much.

however, what i'm trying to understand is whether - once you choose to go maging - you are forced to go through a certain path for a certain optimization, like it happens with melee (ie: 2H at the start, 1H later on) or you have a certain degree of freedom since on average all the elements are good enough - apart Fire which sucks and Holy which performs quite good even on standard arenas.

you're not wrong. dragon's one of the multiple reasons contributing to the unpopularity of fire. giants would be another.

edit: but with most answers. there's usual a tad more complexity involved so it's just the tip of the iceberg

It's better to pick one element and stick to it, unless you're rich hath baron and like to burn money for fun. Good mage gears are very expensive and difficult to find, so it may take you many months or even years to build your ideal set. And then there's forging them, which is even more expensive. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
Of course you can buy cheap crappy gears and not forge much, but then the game will be a constant suffering if you play at higher difficulties.

I found a comparison made by sssss2 a year ago, it's essentially a comparison of how much damage each type of mage needs do deal to clear the same amount of PFUDORfest rounds.

It should probably still be valid?

which basically confirms what i'm saying. even if you consider holy/dark on a whole different league if compared with elements (not that the differences are too big, but still...) and fire out of the game, the other elements are quite tied. if you use imperil, all the 6 elements are pretty much tied.

if this is still valid, then mages are quite balanced afterall. alright, now i can return to excel, thank you.

That was a 400rd PF GF run where he recorded all monsters with HP and resistances and then did some math to find effective hp needed for killing all monsters for the different elements.
For elemental mages there is pretty much no advantage/disadvantage to an element except the proc. At worst there is a 0.1% difference between elements, which seems more when multiplied into the whole data set he collected, but effectively is 200hp on a 200k hp mob.

//E: Note
For elemental only the middle column is of interest, if you don't imperil as elemental, you're doing something really wrong.

in ehwiki, it said that Proficiencies cannot be gained during the turn the Spirit Stance commands, is it for magic proficiencies or all proficiencies?

because i do get proficiencies when my spirit stance toggle on (light armor + 2h)

only the turn that you press the button. After that, while spirit stance is on, proficiency can be gained.

as i thought. check PXPs. PXP 332 is low enough to make a gear have less forge cost. seems like his one has the same forge matrix of an Exquisite, at least at a first glimpse. going with ssss2's matrixes, the sweet point should be 335.

I left one stat unupgraded because I happened to run out of mgw at the time and didn't really care about it. The first level costs 4-low 2-mid just like an exquisite even though it's a magnificent, so it looks like you're right.

Coincidentally, I have a PXP 335 and PXP 336 mag wakizashi on hand. PXP 335 costs 4 LGM+2 MGM for the first upgrade, while PXP 336 costs 2 LGM+4 MGM.

Attached Image Attached Image

EDIT:
This PXP 345 mag leather costs 2 LGL+4 MGL like a normal mag, but this PXP 349 mag leather costs 6 MGL as if it's a legendary.

yep. first, check PXP345's EID: it's an obsolete, so there's the chance some of the things that are valid for today's Mags aren't for those. take this staff, for example: if i wanted to upgrade it, i'd still need LG Wood. to be exact, jumping from lv5 to lv6 requires 1 Regular, 1 LG, 5 MG. usually we don't mind obsoletes too much, especially since the 0.82 revamp (which means all what you read in wiki mosty likely applies only to EID > 67,000,000).
as for the PXP349, ssss2's matrix quotes 348 as the Legendary-tier threshold. seems like material forge's cost is given by PXP0, rather than the prefix.
while those things are the same in most cases, in items with a high number of stats (like Leather and Shade) it can bring odd results
