That's what I do when I want to build up 1H prof when I was 1H mage.
my way to gain staff prof :
get a set of cotton (actually not recommend. but i want to gain cloth prof at the same time. using leather will be a better way for gain staff prof only. plate also works. i guess)
get a crude staff and lower the condition to 1%.
get reloader and crackling cast
get another crude weapon and enter IW (one-handed is preferred since you don't have to access the equipment by doing extra work. tiny difference though.)
cast the buff as usual. maybe you will need to keep using health draught if you are not tanky enough. (i use spark, shield and shadow veil as my IA and i cast protection and regen manually. i didn't use haste. i'm not sure it's better or not but anyway.)
wreck the monster with your broken staff by hovering on them. and keep pressing space bar.
if the monster died. take your mouse and change target.
remember to flee if the round count is too high. the monster hit like a truck when round>700.
theoretically you can use the same way to gain other prof. maybe you will need frugal cloth for spell prof.
but there is a little trick on deprecating prof.
on abilities, don't maxed out the imperil/weaken.
but make them have 1 round cooldown. so that the mana cost is lower.
then change the settings on crackling cast so it will cast imperil and weaken.
BAM! you lowered your mana cost. (but i didn't try this before. this is just a theory.)
