What is the recommended gear for mages? Until now I was going for gossamer/elementalist + focus staff, but now I wonder. Is phase with +elemental damage better than the extra proficiency from elementalist? Or is it maybe better to go with fox for high int?
I don't like to use the defensive gear much, except for bosses. I like my monsters fried and crispy in one or two rounds.
They were talking about this a week ago or so here is the post

Depends on your current stats and setup.
1% EDB is 1% damage, 1 point prof is 0.5% (but affects all elemental spells).
You just have to run the math (and guesstimate, for stats).
Damage formula is Base * (1+Prof / 200) * (1 + EDB) * (1+MDM).
Base is computed from your Magic Rating and the Enemy Barrier Rating.
Magic Rating's effect is poorly understood, but the tougher the monster the more it helps. On Bosses or higher it can be as much as 2% per point, it's a lot less on commons.
So, let's compare equipment that gives 50 prof with stuff that gives 20% EDB for a player with 0 prof and 100 prof. Assume 0 MDM and we'll call base 1.
0 prof: Base * (1+0 Prof) * (1 + 0 EDB) = 1x Base
+ Prof: Base * (1+ 50 Prof / 200) = 1.25x Base
+ EDB: Base * (1 + 0 Prof) *(1 + 0.2 EDB) = 1.2x Base
100 prof: Base * (1+100 Prof) * (1 + 0 EDB) = 1.5x Base
+ Prof: Base * (1+ 150 Prof / 200) = 1.75x Base
+ EDB: Base * (1 + 100 Prof) *(1 + 0.2 EDB) = 1.8x Base
So, the guy with 0 prof is better served with Elementalist, the guy with 100 with EDB in this case.
Higher level mages can explain some of this further (Sayo Aisaka did the testing for these, look for his 'HV Secrets Revealed' or similar post). For a lot of stuff you really do just have to run the math.
its on page 330
Thanks alot dcherry
