Ok, this has probably ben asked before, but here it is. When you finally get access to 2nd level spells, such as Flair and Metior, Does it make sence to rearrange your ability points to take away from the first level versions of the spells to make the newer versions more usefull and powerful from the start?

I just made it to 54th lv and the more powerfull versions just seem to do the job.

If you're really short on AP yes, but keep in mind that elemental or any other rating you boost putting you AP boost your all your spells from that school of magic. So yes T2 spells are powerful, but boosted with elemental rating from T1 are even more powerful.

Thinking of resetting my ability tree. Anyone still use regen I after they get regen II? I don't think I need it anymore.

I think you do need it if you want Regen II. Somebody found out that the curative spells were prereqs or something.

QUOTE(dkplee @ Feb 23 2011, 16:55) *

I noticed you did say you're a little stingy on item usage. My advice is don't, or at least not on any non-godly potions at this level. You'll find more than enough to cover what you use, especially if you do your IWs often.

I'd forgotten to mention that I did start using items shortly after I made that stat post, but I was still having problems in arenas. However when you mentioned that you used haste+shield, it made me reconsider because I never bothered using them as I felt they were waste of mana that would've been best used for cure. But once I started popping average mana potions, constant haste+shield made a HUGE difference as I didn't get hurt as much as I used to (largely because I was killing monsters faster). The fact that I've been busy raising supportive prof certainly made a significant difference as well. In fact because of shield+haste, I was able to clear next level of arena and still had an extra item unused to boot.

So I'm working on some more training for more AP to max out shadow veil, and perhaps poison. Now that haste+shield is making a difference for me, I think I'll try melee bit longer. Also will look into niten weapons as well as elementalist gears (should I aim for gossamer or phase?). Also, wouldn't staff of destruction be better than focus staff?

Well there you go (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Shield often saves you much more HP than a cure can recover. Shield + a greater heal should often be enough to tank through the damage on the later rounds of arenas, when you start encountering multiple mini-bosses.

As a melee who did use SV, I can tell you that one would end up eating more mana than it's worth, and I ended up reseting just to free up the 5 points I put in it. I also never got poison, instead favoring the weaken spell, which allowed me to stop a few highly damage enemies from outright killing me in a few hits.

I'm not sure how your drop rates are, but scrolls apparently are dropping a little bit more often now. You might want to carry a few scrolls in case something goes wrong, since I think some scrolls like warding and shielding don't really see a lot of use at higher levels anyways. Shielding should be especially useful, since it's 25% mitigation effect would stack with your regular shield spell as well.

For elementalist gear, aim for whichever is affordable. Most of the time, phase is more expensive than gossamer, but sometimes some phase with non-desirable stats is surprisingly cheap. And at this level, due to low base magic accuracy, a focus staff is for sure more important than destruction. You'll end up doing more damage in the long run by missing less often. You'll still want to look out for a destruction staff, but you'll want a pretty high base accuracy before switching. I'm currently still using a focus staff myself, with base 84% accuracy.

Don't know why people like focus staffs.
SV scrolls are more useful (shield/barrier scroll combined).
SV is a very nice spell. SV+blind = a mage can rape a boss by wacking staff. Shield is only more useful than sv in the lower difficulties.

That's pretty interesting actually. I didn't know that.

It should be, just click on the window you want to do the capture on, then
control+alt+print screen. I like that more then a full desktop screen capture because I don't need to crop the picture later.

on this laptop the sprint screen key is on the same key as home and I need to use the "fn" key to use it. The "fn" key also gives access to a 2nd command for F1-F12 so ctrl+fn+alt+print screen

I've seen a fair amount of references to "Battle-Toading" to raise your skill proficiencies faster. I was curious what this exactly means, and around what level is it necessary to boost your profs this way?

Increase your difficulty to battletoads via your character settings pane. Enter item world with a staff. Spam lots of spells.
I don't like it. Maybe you think'll think otherwise.

I used BT to raise Staff proficiency, never spell proficiency. What I did was hop in a Flimsy with Evade gear and a max ET staff and just whacked away. Put ET up as necessary to regen MP from casting Cure/Regen.

Nowadays, its much easier to spam damage spells because of the fixed resistance bug. Just find one of the resistant mobs, kill everything else, do 1 damage, pot/ET as necessary, rinse and repeat.

FSM everyday seems to do wonders for my proficiencies. More decap, curative, supportive, and divine proficiency gained in 1 battle than in a month of montages.

Spam a lot of anything and you'll get a lot of proficiencies.
FSM strategy can only be used with spells and staff though. And two hand proficiency is best with cakefest (rather than battletoads), I've found.

This may sound like a stupid question, but here goes. Do you need to be at least at the level of the item you're trying to wear?
