It's not an official Class like D 'n' D monk or anything like that; it's more that the lion's share of us folks in these Forums have at least some RPG experience, so instead of saying everytime "I'd like to have Light Armor and Weapons with high agility so that I can hit fast and evade a lot," we just use 'generic' terms like "Fridge" or "Mage" or "SpellSword" or "Tank."

With that said, one of the Experts (I still don't consider myself one even at Level 87) will soon get back to you.

I strongly recommend taking their advice no matter how time-consuming or difficult (or expensive) it might prove to be to you.

marcho would be your best bet for advice on spellswording it up. IIRC, he's wearing mixed armor (some rare Phase pieces, though) and DW a high parry dagger in the offhand. I imagine it would be possible to do a similar build and using a buckler, particularly one with a "Nimble" enchant if you can't get hold of good armor or a decent offhand.

In general, you'll want to wear a mix of light/heavy or cloth/heavy. You'll want to at least wear heavy for your body piece, since that's where you get the bulk of your stat bonuses from. I'd suggest plate, but mail is fine. Now depending on whether you want to be a pure melee DPS or be able to sling some spells, you'll want either low burden or low interference in light or cloth everywhere else, maybe throw in a piece of chainmail if you need a little more defense. If you can get a hold of them, Phase and Kevlar bits will be godsends. You should try to get equipment that is at least Average quality, preferably Fine so you get more bonuses for less Burden and Interference.

Stat-wise, you'll want to prioritize AGI and then a toss-up between DEX and END, depending on your priorities and final build. If you DW, AGI will be your best friend and DEX will be a good buddy. But END is something everybody needs. If you spellsword, you'll want some WIS and INT since both reduce your Interference and give your better capabilities to cast spells, but you don't need them that high -- try to keep them at least the same as your level.

As far as what you've currently got, you're already on your way. You just need a few tweaks to optimize, which I'll leave to someone with more experience building those types of classes.

Warning: Not an expert.

Spell-Sword is definitely possible, and one of my favorite builds right now. You might need some Battlecaster equipment to pull it off effectively, which is rare, but so worth it for the low interference (something any magic user must pay attention to) and magic accuracy/damage.

Personally, right now I'm nearly all cloth armor with one Battlecaster breastplate and two Battlecaster daggers. The breastplate boosts magic and offers a bit more protection than cloth. The daggers boost my magic, but have better attack, accuracy, and parry stats than the staff a magic user would usually be stuck with. You have to give up on things like Ether Theft, Coalesced Mana, and Channeling, but to be honest, with the recent updates to HV, they weren't doing me much good, anyway.

At any rate, I suspect marcho has more experience at it than I do, and could explain it better, as cmal said.

Very funny. You know that's just for the damage bonus. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Really, it's your fault for not calling this thread something more appropriate, like "Ask the Ascended." Or just "Ask the Godslayer," though I doubt he has time enough for that. I'm sure there are a lot of "experts" like me that don't consider themselves anything of the sort, after all.

Naturally, if I ever make it to Ascended, I'll still be telling people that I'm not. I won't consider myself much of anything until I can beat a boss without using all of my item slots, get my profs up a lot, and can get much further in the Arena. Though right now I'd just settle for being able to beat a boss regularly. That 10K could really help me out...

You and me both.

But I am afraid I must report that ManBearPig has successfully cowed me one time too many (and by "cowed" I mean that his Global Warming has taken off more HP than I have, sometimes preceded with another hit to add injury to insult because even Spark of Life won't help me in that case), and that it will be a little while yet before I dare to show my face in the Arena of Blood again -unless, maybe, I try one of the other Legendaries...

I hear you. I just wasted my second and last token on MBP, as far as I'm concerned. I don't get how something from Al Gore's imagination would be tougher to beat than a busty catgirl... and on a hentai site, no less. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I might fight Mithra again just to see if it was a fluke...

If you meant Mithra, I just got owned by a Boss.........again.

She hit me with "Purr......" IMMEDIATELY followed up in the very next round with "Undress." *

I'm not wasting any more of my precious Tokens of Blood (I only have four left out of 11, and have been saving them up ever since they were first brought to HV), until and unless I can get "Silence" once again.

Apparently, beating these Bosses without "Silence" requires at least a little bit of Luck, and me and Luck aren't really the best of friends.

*Yes, I had a Spark of Life on hand, but no I simply wasn't sure of when to use it; certainly not quite that early into the combat session as I could fairly easily withstand the "Purr" and "Undress" attacks when launched at me one-at-a-time, even when she followed those up with subsequent attacks (she had done each of them to me at least once before). At least her attacks don't hit me nearly as hard as "Global Warming" did.

EDIT: I was slightly wrong; Mithra gave me one melee between "Purr" and "Undress" .....probably to let me get up a false sense of hope. And yes, for those who are curious, I was making judicious use of "Bewilder," and yes I was stuck on the defensive before I could cast it again to go with "Blindness....." which as far as I could tell didn't work worth a damn in terms of making her miss her Magic attacks. If your going to use spark of life, you keep it up at all times... it lasts like 70 turns.

unless your supportive prof sucks

You shouldn't be hit 3 times in a row when using cure. Ditch all your heavy or put some exp in agi, then you can avoid potential spirit criticals, and spark of life will be more effective (because you won't get hit twice). Cure also goes up, etc. I also assume that you have a rapier of awesomeness, so you should be able to tackle legendaries now... though if you don't want to use scrolls, you can save them for later.

Evade works for all enemy attacks. Block also works for all enemy attacks. Parry only works on physical, Resist only works on magical.

I must strongly disagree.

I have successfully parried Magic....many many times.

Including just now, where parrying some of White Bunneh's magic attacks helped me to win against him.

Not all MP-using Skills are magical in nature, even if they do elemental damage. You can parry a Burning Tail, but not a Horrible Rape. You can Resist a Bouip, but not a Rabid Bite.

Blargh, Cronauron's post didn't get quoted for some reason.

Of course. Anything that uses the word "cast" is magical in nature. Anything else isn't.

Only about half of the mobs use magical Skills, so those are the only ones Absorb works against. Hence why Silence > Absorb -- it doesn't matter what kind of Skill it is if they can't use it. Didn't bother with Bewilder, so I don't personally know how that one works.

Also, Manbearpig is the only Boss with a Magical Spirit Attack; the other three are physical. Inversely, MBP is the only one with a physical Skill while the others are magical.

Edit:
Y'know, this actually brought up something that I hadn't thought about -- does Barrier still work like it used to? I hardly ever cast it except in big arena fights, so I'm not really sure any more. Does it defend against only those magic skills, or is it magical damage regardless of skill type?
