Personally, if I'm playing a game with a story, then I want my efforts to make a difference in the game's world. Basically, if everything I did amounted to jack and shit in the end, then I'd most likely be left with a sour taste in my mouth.

Enough to watch review and then whole play through if necessary on you tube and deciding whether experiencing the game play via actually playing is worth it.

List of games rejected due to this

Outlast 2
far cry 4
undertale
far cry 5
deltarune
and most of the toned down anime VNs on STEAM like tank girls and doki doki literature club

Then you won't like Saya no Uta. All of the endings are bad.

In all games that I recently played that have endings (thus excluding the top one Hentaiverse (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ), it is all that matter, for the games would be visual novels, and I may not play the game at all without a walkthrough allowing me to know what kind of endings there are, then choose the route leading to one I'm interested in, while avoiding all bad (officially or subjectively) endings.

Endings are an important part of the narrative. They need to be satisfying in some way, shape or form.

My favorite games are rpgs and jrpgs so, yes, the ending definitely makes a difference. After I put a hundred, or several hundred, hours into a game you tend to get immersed in the world and the stakes in the story. To be left with an unsatisfying or slap-dash ending to a great experience after all that time taints the whole game retroactively. However, to say that the ending is more important than the rest of the gameplay or story is incredibly shallow but it does affect the story on repeat playthroughs.

im a bit torn on this one - usually i don't like it, but then there's the whole deponia trilogy with it's ending, then the sequel with the same ending. (not quite but...it's complicated.) but at the same time the games all about the wacky journey you make and oh man is it amazing and hilarious. i have to say it still was one of the best game series i ever played.

The ending should be satisfying. But if the gameplay is great, I can live with a sub-par story and ending.

A bad ending, where for example the main character dies always spoils the game for me. Most often it makes everything that came before feel pointless. Not to mention that usually the "heroic" sacrifice is really stupid and easily avoidable.

I am a sucker for depressing endings that's why I love Yoko Taro games. So, it doesn't really affect me that much in a negative way at least.

I seriously hate tragedy, if a game has a tragic ending, then I won’t play it. The last time I accidentally played a tragedy game was Final Fantasy XV when I was one of the first players to play, so nobody really knew that everyone in the game pretty much dies in the end... I’ve learned my lesson. Don’t play games without knowing a little about how they end.

They fucked up the story way too much for me to cared about them to be honest. (especially the leading lady) disaster. Adding salt to the injury they cancelled all the dlc which would have gave us happy ending ... oh well its not the first time square ruined their own game. (I somehow feel they get some kind of pleasure ecstasy by doing this (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif))

Like everybody I also dislike sad/tragic games especially if I care about the characters. Last time I was broken emotionally years ago when I played visual novel - Kana little sister/Kana ~Imouto. Man it was depressing as HELL (don't play it kids you will regret it) or (keep some tissue paper next to you since you will need it)

That game must have given me PTSD. I did all the routes, but can't remember anything anymore other than the game pissed me off so much that I refused to play any eroge since then that revolve around sick girls and hospitals.

I value story over everything else when gaming, so a bad ending would ruin it for me.

I don't care about story so much. But if a game doesn't have new game plus or a solid post game then it ruins the game for me.

The ending of a game isn't too important to me... but a terrible ending can definitely ruin the whole game for me, even if I had fun before. On the other hand, an extremely satisfying ending could salvage a mediocre game.

I'm also in the "I hate tragedy" camp... and to some extent, shaggy dog stories/endings too. I play games to have fun. If I want to be depressed, I can just read the news... Though that is not to say you can't enjoy a tragic or a dark ending. It's just not my thing.

depends on the content of the ending.
if you die at the end then everything you did meant jack shit.

games that end on a cliffhanger obvious sequel bait....and then the sequel never comes. specially annoying on an old nes "rpg" that i loved called tombs and treasure. game blatantly says "se you in another game...." and the game never came.

You’re right, Square has ruined a few games, just because ‘tragedy’ genre seems to be super popular in Asia doesn’t mean the whole world loves it!! The one time I tried watching a Japanese TV show a guy broke up with a girl, she chased after him begging him to come back, then she was hit by a car and died. After she dies the guy realizes he made a mistake and should have never left her. I saw just one episode and I wanted to slash my wrists and end it all, really Japan really?! Which makes me happy Square never really finished the new FF7. That will always be one of my all time favorite games and I feel like they will screw it up somehow if they try to make it again.
