A note from the translator:
I highly recommend to you to read the foreword *after* you read the story. Especially if you think the story is strange, as I did, reevaluate this work after you read the author's notes and finally my explanations, that will hopefully shed some light on the plot for non-Japanese readers.
Also, this work contains major spoilers to the story line of Hyouka. So if you intend to watch/read it, I recommend doing so before reading this work. (Spoilers up to Episode 5 of the anime.)

Foreword
※As I can't add an afterword I put it in the front. Read it last please.
Hello, I'm Takutsuboya.
This time I made a Hyouka book.
The anime adaptation Kyoto Animation gave Hyouka is pretty high quality, don't you think? When it comes to cute girls, I thought K-on would be Kyoto Animation's masterpiece, so I got really surprised that they topped it again with Hyouka. I'm really thankful that we can watch such high quality animes every week for free. As a doujin artist this really motivated me to work on my Eru Chitanda stories.
Well then, when you think of student’s revolt in the ‘60s and the campaign against the Japan-U.S. security treaty the United Red Army will quickly come to mind. As for me, one of my first memories in life is seeing the reporting about the Asama-Sansō incident on TV at kindergarten age. When I went home I wanted to watch “With Mother” like always, but I remember that every channel was showing footage about the onslaught of Asama-Sansō. After that incident the lynch justice purge which is topic of this manga was discovered, but still I think on the next day the newspaper contained a comic strip where Yakuzas bowed before the United Red Army and said “we surrender”. This doujin is pressed into few pages so I can understand your dissatisfaction with the panel layout, but I wanted to cover all of it in this episode. I'm happy that I could draw it to my heart's content.
I can't begin to guess at your reactions yet, but I drew this with immense passion.
At the end of May I got diagnosed with a cataract in my right eye so I was worried if I could finish the draft without running in to trouble, but it actually didn’t hamper the speed of my drawing at all. From now on I will pay more attention to my health.
Well then, let's meet again next time.

##惜しまない ← used as not regret instead of without sparing
*Not long after, an email with a link to a video sharing site was sent to the Japanese consulate in Turkey.
*The young woman had picked a fight with a local mugger and was kidnapped by a drug syndicate which demanded a ransom.
*In these regions, abduction is handled like business as usual.
*Of course, there’s nothing the family can do in such an incident.
*All we can do is to let it be taken care by the government officials and the local police.

T/N: the characters read "no" and "hair"
>You mean like the hair growing on your crotch?
>That's pubic hair.
T/N: the characters read "embarrassing" and "hair"
>Now that we’re talking about it, Oreki-san, why does pubic hair grow in the first place?
>Dunno
*On that note, here we have more people with boisterous energy-wasting lifestyles.
<Oreki, you're the worst sexual harasser.
>That remark didn't suit Hōtarō.

*Oreki-san
>Something good happened to me today and so I'm in a good mood,
>but I can't remember what the good thing was.
<Help me remember it please!
##親類
>Surely her family and relatives tried to make her happy since she was born
>and she knew that being happy made the people around her happy too.
007.
>…… Since when…
>Pardon me?
>Yesterday when you went to sleep, were you already in a good mood?
>Ah, no, yesterday I guess I went to bed as usual.
>Did you have a good dream?
<No, I can't remember having one.
>So it must have happened after you woke up.
#alt: So tell me what happened after you woke up.
>When did you wake up?
>Half past six. That’s what my alarm is always set to.
>What did you do first?
>I grabbed a towel and went into the bathroom…
\Ah⁉
*I remember!
*When I wanted to brush my teeth there was almost no tooth paste left!
*But when I opened the drawer there was a new tube.
*I had forgotten about it, but I had already bought extra.
>That's it! That's what made me happy.
>It’s only because of you I could remember. Thank you, Oreki-san!
<Chitanda,
>have people ever gotten angry with you?
<Huh?
<What do you mean by that?
>Did I make you feel upset?
##why is it not passive 立たれたんですか??
>Ahahaha, Chii-chan, there's no way that Oreki gets angry.
>For him it would be way too wasteful to use so much energy. That’s not like him at all.
#lit: He has not enough energy for such things, as he has a energy saving lethargy defect.
>Yeah, Hōtarō getting angry, that's like plants getting angry: I can’t see it happening.
#lit: mayaran flowers
^These jerks, saying whatever they please…
008.
008.
*But actually, Ibara has a point with her objection.
*I'm awful at getting angry.
*Because expressing anger is pretty much the opposite of saving my energy.
*The Okinawa problem of the DPJ administration, territorial disputes, biased journalism in mass media, arguments on Twitter…
*No, I'm rather envious of people who have excess energy with which they can become angry.
>I see.
>I've never seen Oreki-san or Fukube-san angry.
>Now it hit her ///
#Shit, I started a rumor
>Satoshi gets angry sometimes.
>I've seen Fu-chan angry.
>Oh, I didn't know.
>For instance recently…
>Mayaka-chan, Satoshi will be back any time now, you can wait for him in his room.
\Excuse me. #pardon the intrusion
>Ohh, how messy.
>What is this? X-File?
>School rumors… Student name register…
>It's full of notes. He even prepared vocabulary flashcards…
009.
<HEY! Mayaka, MAYAKA!
<Looking at private stuff without permission.
<Wahaha
\Fu-chan, did you go all the way to write and memorize this because you like to be called database?
<Calling it X-File… Hahaha!
>Maybe you should turn your touching efforts to studying for once?
*Wargh
<You jerk, mind your own business you dumb bitch!
<Ouch, what are you doing.
<Don't dare to come in here without my permission ever again!
<Ouch…
>Uncool ///
>Satoshi, what are you doing. Keep it down in there!
>Don't complain, you really did that to me.
>Oreki-san, I'm scared…
>That's what I meant when I said he can snap.
010.
>Ten years ago, I was always close with my uncle Jun Sekitani, but at one day I asked him about the classic literature club.
\That time Uncle's answer or reaction made me cry.
>It was different than usual, I cried but he didn't comfort me.
\Why didn't he comfort me? Oreki-san, I want to think about this together with you.
*Again?
*Isn't it quite common to ignore a brat's crying from time to time.
*She must have been a real princess if she gets traumatized from being ignored just once.
>But why do you come to me with all your troubles?
>Aren’t there plenty of family, relatives, and girlfriends you could ask as well?
>Oreki-san
>I have no intention to go around telling everyone about my personal history.
~Ah, sorry.
^Why does it look like I'm the bad guy now?
011.
>What a good smell.
\I like it.
>So you like Vienna hot chocolate?
>No
:>Sniff sniff
>It's Oreki's smell.
*In the end,
*I couldn't take on her burden. (Why did I have to in the first place!)
*I didn't promise to solve the case for her,
*but I said I would report it if I found a clue,
*something that might help her remember.
*Of course, when it comes to a conversation between Jun Sekitani and Chitanda ten years ago,
*I didn't expect to find any clues.
*But contrary to my expectations, things got on rolling faster than I had anticipated.
*As finally there was a call from my sister.
*I heard my sister had been rescued due to the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish police and was under protection of the Japanese consulate.
*I don't care if she'll look back on this happily in ten years, she has to show gratitude to her helpers now. ///

*Relying on new info I had received from my sister, I threatened my upperclassman Tōgaito with my investigation about his tobacco plant,

*I knew that the girls' opinion of me would change fast with this ruthless execution.

>Oreki-san
\To understand the reason I cried at that day, I need you to understand more about me.
>That is why I brought something with me today that I like you to read!
<Here
>What is this?
>This is my diary, I've always been writing in it since I was little.
>Ooh, Chii-chan's diary…
\I'm interested in this.
>Chitanda-san, may we read it too?
<Aaaaah, noo, no way!
<It's too embarrassing if people would read it, I would die!
>I only brought it with me because Oreki-san needs to read it.
>Here, take this. Let's read together!
013.
*MM/DD
*xx-kun from class is always staring at me.
*Not only xx-kun, but also xx-kun, xx-kun and xx-kun.
*It's because I'm super cute.
*It seems like the boys are always talking about me.
*I have to properly practice rejection for the time when they confess to me.
*MM/DD
*Today on lunch break I mounted the iron rod and got called aside and warned by xx-sensei.
*That was totally embarrassing.
<Waah, I don't want to read this!
<You have to!
<It may contain hints that help to solve my request.
*MM/DD Illustrated entry
*I drew a picture of daddy's pee-pee as I remember from the bath.

*I had my first menstruation. I was surprised, but mother cooked red rice and father was happy.
*But I was embarrassed when my uncles heard about it.
*MM/DD
*I'm happy that I grew some more, but I'm worried that I will have trouble finding a boyfriend if I continue growing.
*My breasts are getting bigger too.
>Oreki-san, aren't you turning the pages too quickly.
\Are you really reading everything carefully?
>Yes I am.
\Is this another Vita Sexualis?
T/N: Quote from Wikipedia: Vita Sexualis is an erotic novel published in 1909 by Mori Ōgai. The protagonist of the novel, Shizuka Kanei, is understood to be an autobiographical representation of Mori Ōgai.
<Aah, this part here, read it very carefully.
014.
>Chitanda
>Yes
(Like two cogwheels)
>You went bathing together with you father until middle school?
>Yes, I always went to bath with my family. But when my father realized how I had grown he said we shouldn't bath together anymore.
>I see, it was getting to be an issue for your father too.
>It was funny seeing my dad get red and trying not to look.
>……Didn't we just kiss right now?
>…Ahh… yeah… that's right. Somehow.
>Somehow I guess
>Yeah
>Okay, that's enough. Ibara-san and Fukube-san seem to have gone home already.
>How late is it?…
\You have such a pure and innocent image, but you actually always have pretty lewd thoughts. Well, at this age it's just normal to be interested in that kind of stuff I guess.
>Is that so? Oreki-san, am I a lewd girl?
>I don't know, maybe this level of interest is totally normal.
>Actually, I might have gotten a little wet just now.
>……Don't tell me that.
015.
>Well then, let’s get started.
>I’ll start with my presentation first, okay?
*The kind hero Jun Sekitani.
*45 years ago, he was responsible for an incident that should become a hand down legend.
#Should become, or should’ve become?
*But the things he did were both a fight and a sacrifice,
*certainly something that cannot be called the story of a hero.
##譚
*According to the manga club's anthology “Unity and Salute”,
*In the aftermath of the movement there were twenty full or partial expulsions from school, including Jun Sekitani’s.
*So something pretty violent must have happened to provoke such an extreme reaction.
*We should have a look at the historical context.
*It's the point in history where the public campaign against the Japan-U.S security treaty had student movements on the rise.
*I studied the “Kamitaka Monthly Report”
*and there were several movements divided into subgroups inside this school.
*The groups with the most radical methods were
*“Joined Revolution Fight“ and “The Red Partisans”.
*Jun Sekitani was a member of The Red Partisans
*Their motto was to fight an extermination battle till the very end.
#Fight an extermination battle sounds like something the EDF would say, not sure what it means in this context. Could be like “Fight a battle to exterminate them to the last” or “Fight a battle to exterminate opposing viewpoints until all of us are dead”, or “till the very end” could be separate and saying that their motto remained the same for their whole existence
##殲滅戦
>Sorry, can I use your bathroom?
>Ah, I’ll show you.
016.
^So close…
>It's here.
>Thanks.
>Sorry, I'll go in first.
>Huh⁉ Hey.
>I'll be done quickly, please wait here.
:>sigh
*Oreki-san is at my home.
*And now he's in front of the toilet…
*This is exactly like I always imagined…
*Aaah, shall I really go on with the plan?
017.
*What will happen if I do a thing I absolutely shouldn't do…
*I'm curious!
*If I get discovered Oreki-san will be my insurance…
##なのは?
*What was that?
*If a girl gets seen doing this it's over…
>Haa
>Haa
*Even more so when it's a girl of marriageable age who's known for her good conduct…
018.
>Oreki-san, are you there?
>Yeah, I'm here.
>Did you draw any conclusions
\from our reports?…
019.
^Aahh
>I'm thinking about it right now.
^Oreki-san is on the other side of the unlocked door and I'm doing something like this…
>Haa
>Hah
020.
*I'm so loud…
*How disgraceful.
*Aahh, I can't bear the embarrassment…
:pattering (water hitting water sound)
*I might…
*flatulate…
:>farting sound
>Sorry for keeping you waiting. Please, Oreki-san.
>Ah, yeah.
*It's strange to think that Chitanda doesn't care about things like this.
*Well, it's her house. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it?
*My sister also carelessly runs around our house in just her panties…
#うろつき回る = rove, prowl, go cruising
*She left the toilet seat open!
*It's still warm.
*Just a moment ago Chitanda's naked ass was touching here…
021.
*Aaaa, I did it…
##幻滅、軽蔑
*Will he be disappointed in me? Will he be resenting me?
>Well then, now it's my turn right?
>I will summarize based on the formal record named “A Walk Through 50 Years of Kamiyama Highschool”.
##指導者、思想、生真面目、敵前逃亡、歴、器 = ability?、武闘、派
*with the original members having been expelled or graduated, the Kamiyama student movement was coming to a close.
*That goes for the Red Partisans and its management of deciders too, so in his third year Jun Sekitani became the senior leader of the group.
*Sekitani had always been seriously invested in the ideology of the movement, but when he saw his comrades deserting before the enemy he realized he wasn’t fit to lead the group alone.
#alt: he wasn't skilled enough to be a leader.
#lit: was no vessel to stand above the people
*So Sekitani approached another armed combat organization from our school that was also afraid of its decline, the “Joined Revolution Fight” movement.
##合同、武装、演習、親交、追及、覚悟
*They underwent a joint armed training mission in the Southern Alps and a new friendship was formed between these two groups.
*Later they fused into a single group called “United Partisans” and swore to fight the teachers to the end.
*Alas, the pressure from teachers and police became more intense, so Sekitani accepted his expulsion and fled to the base of Mt. Haruna in the Gunma prefecture with 29 members.
>Jun Sekitani, a hero who didn't give in to the teachers until the end.
>And the literature club's collection “Hyouka” is eponymous of his deeds.
#either "naming that", or "giving praise"
\And the reason it didn't become a hero's tale is that many of his comrades got expelled with the victory still distant on the horizon.
>Thank you all for your work today.
\Let's create an essay based on Oreki's theory.
>See you, Chii-chan.
*But Oreki-san,
*if that’s the real story, why did I cry back then?
022.
>Oreki-san.
>Thank you for the other day.
<As a team and friendship building exercise, the classic literature club members are going to a hot spring!

#Curtains from right to left: Men, Mixed, Women
>Huh, nobody here?
\Is it all right to use it while it's being remodeled?
>Looks like the recession is hitting leisure facilities especially hard.
^These are Satoshi's clothes?
^Why did he go into the mixed bath?
023.
>I wonder what kind of bath it will be.
>I'm looking forward to it.
^I knew this before, but her breasts are seriously huge.
^Will I really see them bare?
^These panties really lack anything extra…
#These look more like pants
^But the fact that she doesn't wear strange erotic underwear shows that she grew up in a good environment I guess.
>Ehehe
024.
^Oohh
^She's got a pretty thick bush there, it’s different from how I imagined.
^And it's covering a rather big area.
^Uh? How unexpected. She didn't shave her armpits?
^On the other hand, for a such a fine lady with family traditions, it makes sense to leave it natural.
^Oh!
^How could I bear letting her hide it with a towel?
<Ah
<Hey, Oreki-san.
>Come on, let's go.
025.
>Wow, what a phenomenal hot spring, Oreki-san!
>It’s pretty normal…
>Ah, Hōtarō, you came.
<Eh? Chitanda-san? Seriously?
>Eh, yes. We're all naked. Isn't this what you call naked socializing?…
#Strange phrasing makes me unsure what’s being communicated. Is “naked socializing” a special phrase?
<Ah
>Yeah
>……
:>Woosh
>Chitanda
026.
>Does this pique your curiosity?
<Yes,
\I'm totally curious.
>Because some day, something like this could be inside me!
>Chitanda, are you a virgin?
<Oreki-san! May I touch it?
<Yes, I'm a virgin!
>I see, me too.
>…So, should we do it now?
>
>If we're both interested we could just do it here and now, it would save me from wasting energy finding someone else.
#two virginities, also it's very energy saving that he doesn't have to look for a partner
<That means that you and I will be having sex, right?
>Yeah.
>I wonder how it will feel once we have sex.
<Well, it means we will become more intimate, right?
>Oreki-san, do you want to have sex with me?
>If I have to answer, then the answer is yes, I guess I do.

*She's so warm inside.
*My body is moving on its own.
*This doesn't feel like me.

*Up to now, Chitanda was a bit of an enigma for me,

>Hop
>Oreki… Are you going to do it with me?
>You have a good sense of what's going on, as expected from a member of the manga club. People say small girls are lewd, do you think you’re an exception?
>What is that supposed to mean?
<How should I put it…
\It would be a lie to say that that thought didn't cross my mind when I realized I'm on an overnight trip together with boys…
<But then I was wondering whom to give my virginity,
\and as Fuku-chan is gay there's only Oreki left…
>What do you think, Satoshi?
>Databases don't make decisions. Mayaka can decide for herself.
>Ibara, grip firmly
<Wah
<Aaahh
<It hurts, it hurts!
<It's like you're breaking me up.
035.
<You're so mean… This will not become a rose colored memory at all.
>Relax, high school life isn't only rose colored. ///why いない instead of じゃない
*This goes for me too, for Satoshi, for Chitanda,
*and finally for Jun Sekitani.
>Is that so? Hōtarō, you just ate up all the girls in the literature club.
>Even if you don't call it rose colored, it's looks like you have a flower hanging on each arm.
*If you look at it from the outside…
*Yeah, if you look from the outside, Jun Sekitani was simply a hero too.
<Hey, Oreki. Don't think of something else while I'm having my first time.
*As the leader of an organization with 29 people under him, he had a dictatorial aura where nobody would voice anything against him.
*Was Jun Sekitani satisfied?
*The answer to that questions
*won't be found on school grounds

>Hōtarō, when you make that face, it means you've discovered something, right?
>Oreki-san, I think there is still something we have to know about that case.
>It's alright, I think I can complete most of the picture now.

>We should have given more thought on the name “Hyouka”.
>Its clear meaning is that Jun Sekitani's story isn't a real hero tale.
>The passage about the victims could also be read as a sacrifices.
>Yes, it can indeed. The kanjis were originally the same.
>The uncertainty about being a hero means
>that at least up to a given point in time he was considered a hero, right?
>That means probably until the time he left school.
>So something happened afterwards that made him not being a hero anymore?
>Yes, that’s what I’m thinking.
\Your brain's working well when you have a dick inside you.
>Shut up.
\But we still don't know what happened.
>But the person who wrote “Hyouka” must know what happened.

>It's because
>Jun Sekitani is my uncle.
>Itoigawa-sensei, please enlighten us. What happened to the 29 people who went into the mountains.
>Why did Uncle cease to be a hero⁉
038.
>T-yama-san,
>what made you come here to the mountains?
>The reason?… I came to bring the revolution forward.
>After I realized that we had to become revolution soldiers, I came here to plan how to fight a revolutionary war in a developed nation…
>That's not what I mean. I want to have a more realistic answer.
>What personal feelings and thoughts did you come here with?

Afterword by the translator
Don't forget to read the foreword of the author.
Read my following comments last (or ignore them).
WTF did I just read? That escalated badly.
I picked up this work because I like it when there is a solid story in hentai, but I was really disappointed how stupid the story turned out to be. I watched the anime in parallel and this looked like a very gruesome reinterpretation of the plot, only adding pointless violence. Seriously, how unrealistic and put up. No serious complaints about the murders? Nobody questioning the pointless beating? How could someone be so brainwashed? What sick mind must the author have to do this to Hyouka?
Well, needless to say I was quite shocked when I learned that these incidents were all based on real occurrences, as the author's foreword explains. And the author didn't even exaggerate (though the compression into few pages surely shifts the view). For all of you who are interested in what precisely has happened in reality, I highly recommend this article: [unseenjapan.com] https://unseenjapan.com/united-red-army-japan/ (it's pretty long, you can start reading from "The United Red Army"). Hard to believe that this is real history of modern Japan (1971!). I hope this helps you to see this work in a better light.
Btw, to those who have watched the anime, what do you think of this adaptation? I learned a lot about history which was very interesting for me, but the integration into the Hyouka storyline doesn't fit too well. In this work Sekitani is a clear monster (that rape scene, was that really necessary??) which absolutely contradicts his nice personality Chitanda describes him to have. Oreki is also portrayed too violent in my opinion, especially Ibara's first time was more sad than funny. Chitanda's toilet scene was nice but also not well integrated (what was the point storywise?). I loved it how they kissed unintentionally after reading her diary, that fit well :D.
Until next time,
Shapes
Explanation of the Hyouka riddle (page 049)
ヒョ-ウ-カ-ッ!!
hyo-u-ka-tsu
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓
so-u-ka-tsu
#editor note: can you please copy the two frames here (the 2nd and 5th)
Attentive readers might have spotted that the title is hyouka, but it became hyo-u-ka-tsu here. In the Japanese version the "tsu" "appeared" when Eru shouted the word (in the frame above). Japanese shares the same sign for the sound "tsu" and for the "lack of a sound" sound. That latter is just a smaller version of the sign of the former: ツ and ッ. In case of Eru's scream it would indicate that she used up her breath, not that she added "tsu" to her scream. The Japanese word for review, "soukatsu", ends with a "tsu" which is identified with the "lack of sound" from screaming "hyouka_". Substituting these signs is quite a stretch imho, definitely not as obvious as Hōtarō likes it to appear.
