What I don't understand is why I shouldn't use mage until near the endgame. I started using and speccing into mage by the time I was about Lv75, and it's by far my best class. I understand that early players shouldn't just rush into it, but I feel like it's effective much earlier than in the endgame.
As it was been mentioned - it is all about survability. You can play safely and easily with any class on Noal difficulty - no matter, mage, or two-handed - everything would go.
But at some point you will decided to set higher difficulty (for example, Hell) and this is when problem will come. Mage just has very low defence on low level and his spells are not that powerful (because you havent opened right abilities). Near level 200 monster will start to use powerful spirit attack that will annihilate you in few second, so effectively you will decrease your difficulty back to low and will patiently waiting for leveling.
Melee is totally different beast - with every given level his survability become higher and higher and near level 300 you already can highest difficulty in the game - PFUDOR.
So, play as mage if you want, but expect difficulties with levelling and survival.
Good luck anyway (IMG:[
