Looks fair enough, even though it's unfortunate he only revealed his intention for the item in the last 5 minutes. He bid more than you, so he won the item.

If you bid from [reasoningtheory.net] the website, you will automatically outbid any other bidders by the minimum bid, up to your limit.

You will outbid other bidders up to your limit, but you will not outbid other bidders past your limit. (that wouldn't really make sense)

as I've said many times, it's in bidders' best interests to bid uneven amounts, and to avoid the nice round numbers like "1m", no matter whether they're proxy bidding or competing against a proxy bidder.

That was actually a classic ebay auction ending. Proxy bidder is outbid at last second by a snipe bidder who bids 1 cent more. Generally speaking, if you are sniping it is good to bid 1 cent, 2 cents, or 11 cents more than the even amount.

If you are the high proxy bidder on ebay, I'm not as sure about bidding uneven amounts, though. Sometimes you can get bid up out of spite. You can also be bid up into revealing your uneven bid, at which point the attacker knows your real bid.
