At least use Translator Aggregator with Mecab and Jparser (with furigana set on romaji). It will help you understand more of what something means and might improve your rewrites or translations, though it's useless if you don't even care about the original meaning.

1/4-Based Anon, I think we've just gotten to a point where we agree to disagree...your command of Japanese is better than mine, my command of English is better than yours...I don't make a habit of criticizing other people's translations/rewrites/whatevers, in this case I thought it was just important to make a distinction. Now if I had someone like you to work with to get more precise translations, together we could do much better work...maybe I should offer my services as an editor rather than a translator....

That's really good...I would have made some very minor changes but overall, nicely done...good use of fonts, too

Still, I wish people would stop using "fufu": it's a sound effect, no one actually says that, not here, not in Japan, not anywhere I know...I always use "heh heh" or something similar...

A good example of this is "geddo geddo"...that's the sound effect for a frog in Japanese...in English of course it's "ribbit ribbit" I would use "ribbit", you might use "geddo". These are the sort of things I talk about when discussing literal translations

By the way, why do you go by the name of "Noraneko" there rather than Shikiller?

A frog's sound effect is usually translated from Jap as Gero/Kero, but that's being nitpicky. It's up to the translator's discretion as to whether or not to use a certain phrase or use the english version of it. For example, changing Kukuku/Kekeke, to Ohohoho. The meaning is there, but you're changing the words they say. But overall, it is a personal choice that would not affect the way a reader reads a story. Most readers gloss over sound effects in a similar way, as it doesn't matter to them whether a squirting effect is labelled as "squirt" or "pushuu". After all, when you read hentai manga, there is an implicit understanding that you are reading a Japanese production, not an English one.

The latter is probably not as good and will definitely fuck up my ability to follow the progression of events in latter chapters and henceforth from reading it I will not understand a work the way it was wriiten. WIth great care by someone who speaks runish and not a romance language.

I have no way of knowing if the translation is correct, but it should be to the extent possible. From actual translation, not best effort.

Yeah, that's the ideal. I'm doing my translations just to get a better grasp on the written Japanese but I can't really claim I'm doing much better than MisterJ here. I've got nearly no vocabulary when it comes to kanji, so I use the radical searching engine on jisho.org pretty heavily.

I would feel that radical searching is fine, as long as you know how to read the rest of the Japanese to a passable level. Heck, even some Chinese translations use traditional hanzi that looks like some crazy art statement, requiring the use of radical searching websites. If its a few words you need to clarify and not half the doujin, then that's fair.

But, and this is crucial, if you acknowledge that you cannot 100 percent say that your translation or intepretation of the translation is correct, then please use the rewrite tag.

On a scale from coward to hubris I prefer a happy medium, I can't 100 percent say anything but I don't think I'm very far off the mark. I usually keep my translations to myself, anyhow.

I previously wrote a post on why I consider machine translations to be a bad idea. In it I quoted some other posts. One of them included a bunch of examples. The link to my previous post can be found in my signature.

Now, of course, technology advances steadily. Let's see how well today's software does on the sample sentences (description and English translation given by vlad and quoted in the linked post) from that post. Six years are a long time after all.

Yahoo! 翻訳 and Reverso often, but not always, gave the same result. They probably use different versions of the same translation software.

What: Extremely simple, grammatically correct sentence with a single verb.
Difficulty: You should be able to translate this sentence after a week of Japanese studies.
Japanese: ね先輩、エッチしよう！

What: Very polite and somewhat convoluted sentence, yet perfectly grammatical.
Difficulty: Hard; even Japanese people get this wrong before they get their first real job.

Google: I would like your lady to be the president. . .
excite.com: I'd like to have a chairperson be your daughter.
Yahoo! 翻訳: The young lady wants a chairperson to do it. . .

excite.com: As mercury is eaten, I get ill more.
Yahoo! 翻訳: I get sick if I eat mercury so as to eat.
Systran: If the mercury is eaten, it becomes the extent sickness which is eaten.
Bing: Enough to eat if you eat mercury, become ill.
Reverso: I get sick if I eat mercury so as to eat.

What: 2ch slang
Difficulty: So-so. Slang is always a bitch, but compared to other 2ch-speak, this one is nothing.
Japanese: あんなスレはこんなにたくさんレスができたなんて。。。ww
Google: I can not believe that such thread has made so much loss. . . Ww
excite.com: That much lessly could be made such SURE so much. ww

I certainly won't be hiring your sorry ass for anything. If people are smart, they won't either.
