Actually, Leather is pretty decent, especially at lower levels. You can even upgrade it for very cheap to reach very good stats.
It's only unpopular, not bad. Shade is acknowledged as being better though. But I wouldn't recommend shade for Longswords, due to attack speed being counter-productive regarding Bleeding Wound.
