Apparently, Russian IPs have been blocked from accessing galleries.
While I'm not particularly opposed to this, I'm rather interested in the reasons behind this.

Also, one thing that does bother me is that when I try using a proxy, most proxy IPs already have 5000+ image views so I can't open any pages. Is it possible to exclude registered users from the block, or at least users with a certain account age or modpower?

With bronze star and up image limits are tied to your account rather than IP.

Still, I wonder why did EH suddenly decided to self-censor Russian IPs. If it's because g.e-hentai.org is blocked in Russia then it's pointless. It's not like they can do anything else to foreign sites other than blocking them.

Open a gallery and show this "This content is not available in Russia."

Still I assume the reason is russian law for CP. Russian legislators have no brain at all, and the law for CP is very vague, so anyone who posts picture with nude character that can be assumed(!!!) by officials less then 18yo, even drawn(!!!), violates the act and can be sentenced up to 6 years in jail.
Knowing how russian authorities and courts work, no one has even chance to prove innocence if there is a policy decision.

But why disallow Russian IPs on your side? It's not like they can do anything to you anyway other than blocking the site in Russia which they already did. I can bypass my ISP's DNS redirect block by simply editing the hosts file but if EH itself refuses to connect then proxy is the only option. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
Sites like boorus have been operating without doing anything like that.

Well, Pornhub and most of other blocked sites didn't cave in from angry meaningless letters and haven't effectively banned their users themselves so they can still be available without a proxy.

It hasn't been discussed on this forum afaik. Can you really expect every russian user to even know about, or be expected to read some twatter account? There should have been a news post at least, considering it's a fairly dramatic change in site policy.

As said above, the problem with proxies is that they often already are above image limit.

The link is interesting because that twitter exchange develops exactly the same way as this thread: People complaining that the world around them is not solving their problems for them. Even that sorting this out for yourself is quite trivial, requires a good tutorial and some effort.

And yes, I can read russian with considerable ease.

Is that userbase/traffic/content big enough for you to take it in consideration?

Now Russians will have to pay for a good VPN to access this site, instead of just changing DNS like before.
Free VPN aren't even in consideration since they are really slow.
So you're basically cutting off most of the Russians (we all know most are pretty poor), but for what purpose?
It's not like Roskomnadzor is going to go after this site, apart from blocking it on ISP level (Or are they? That would be a reason that makes sense, at least).
What would Tenboro do if all governments tomorrow decided to ban this site? Would he just cut off all the users of the world and remain alone?
